The ReHHup Committee volunteers are doing a neighborhood walk in the North Main project area this morning. We are focusing on sidewalks in need of repair or improvement to make them more accessible and stroller/wheelchair/walker friendly. If you see us, wave and say hi!

In 2021, the ReHHUP Committee of the Knox County Landmarks Foundation plans to launch a home repair grant and loan program in the North Main area of Mount Vernon (pictured here). We also want to develop other services that residents want to see in the neighborhood. If you live in the North Main area or own property there, please take our renter or property owner's survey to help us develop our program. You can also send feedback to [email protected]!
The Reinvesting in Historic Homes Update Program (ReHHUP) is a volunteer-run grant and loan program that assists exterior renovation projects in Mount Vernon's historical neighborhoods. We focus on restoring neighborhoods by rewarding property owners’ investments in their piece of the street. We currently operate in Mount Vernon’s East End, but we hope to research expanding the program to the North Main area in the future.
We are seeking volunteers to fill the following roles:
• Committee members to evaluate grant and loan applications and make decisions about the program’s direction.
• Writers and researchers interested in compiling guides to preserving historic homes by researching and composing technical manuals. We are seeking individuals with preexisting historical expertise regarding Mount Vernon’s housing and neighborhoods, in particular.
• Surveyors interested in volunteering to survey homeowners and tenants in project areas to gauge impact and need. Photographers especially welcome.
MINIMUM RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Attend monthly meetings on the second Thursday of every month from 5:30-7:00 PM
• Complete one hour of work a week
• Evaluate grant applications and committee proposals prior to meetings for discussion
If the ReHHUP Committee’s work appeals to you, please send a letter of interest and resume to [email protected] including what assistance you believe you can offer the committee.

ReHHUP Project Highlights: The Freedom Center (2019)
The Freedom Center was the first nonprofit in ReHHUP's East Side project area to take advantage of our program and reinvest in the neighborhood.
Ebenzer Woodward, the founder of the Woodward Opera House, called the treatment center home from the 1830’s to the 1870’s. The building was constructed in the Greek Revival style, with ionic columns and symmetrical one story wings that the Knox County Historical Society suggests imitate a Greek temple.
The Freedom Center’s ReHHUP project restored one of these ionic columns as well as the property’s facade. ReHHUP connected the Freedom Center with the Neighborhood Design Center to reimagine elements of the building while remaining faithful to its historic structure. The Neighborhood Design Center created a design to evoke the treatment center's logo, properly light the front lawn, and find appropriate furniture for the porch.
It's hard to imagine a better way to signal clients that they're in the right place than the Freedom Center's eye-catching purple shutters and matching sign!
