Amy Benson is currently a quality control team leader, and she has always been interested in the sciences. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Evansville and a Master’s degree in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University. In high school, the subjects Carrie Otto was passionate about were music and science. Now, she has a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from IU and has held positions in Drug Research, Medical Device, Food, Toxicology and now Instrument Sales and Service. The two women met working at Mead Johnson in the Quality Control Lab. Their shared love for science and desire to share their passions with a new generation of scientists led them to starting a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) lab in the MAKE it Evansville space. They have offered evening classes in subjects ranging from robotics to air plants to string art. In Otto’s current line of work, sometimes problems are an easy fix, and others take several days. She enjoys seeing the different ways the kids approach challenges. Their work has shown students opportunities in the sciences and taught them valuable problem-solving skills.

Rachel Price was always determined to get into a fine arts job, but she always had a love for chemistry. After taking both chemistry courses at the high school, she knew it could be something she could do forever. Chemistry challenges and entertains her. Going through a polymer chemistry major track at Murray State has led her to getting an internship at SABIC over the summer and she is excited to see all the other things chemistry can offer her while still staying local.

Debra Schorr has been working with Quality Ex*****on Engineering (QualEx) as a lead process engineer for nearly 6 years and worked for Apex Engineering for 9 years. She is responsible for establishing and documenting the nature of the chemicals processed for construction projects and studies. She has provided engineering services for many industries in chemical, plastic, and refining. She has established a niche with these clients in becoming educated in two-phase flow and chemical unstable relief over-pressure protection modeling. She earned her Masters in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville and her undergraduate Engineering BS degree also from the University of Louisville.

Debra stepped away from engineering for 9 years to teach secondary education. She earned a teacher’s license and a Masters of Education from the University of Southern Indiana through a transition to teaching program. Over those 9 years, she taught physics, chemistry, and a variety of levels of mathematics.

Debra has a love for science and learning. She recommends that anybody interested in the sciences read the illustrated book, “A Short History of Everything.” Between the intriguing content and complementary illustrations, it will certainly peak the curiosity of people who like to ask the question “why?”

She has also been a club volleyball coach for the past 10 years. As a coach, she not only works to improve physical skills, but more importantly, she empowers young women to show leadership and work in a collective group to achieve the same goal!
