People ask me why I stay involved with the Sons and Daughters of Italy. It's because the culutre is important...not only to people of Italian decent but to the human family. The culture places the focus on the bedrock of humanity's survival.....family....biological or chosen. This is why.......

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently made a formal announcement recognizing Italian cuisine as a UNESCO “intangible cultural heritage,” honoring it not simply as food, but as a living social ritual—one that binds families, anchors communities, and carries tradition from one generation to the next. The designation celebrates shared meals, time-honored methods, and the passing down of recipes as acts of cultural continuity.

What they don’t tell you is this: Italian cooking isn’t just a learned skill. It’s a genetic inheritance. It’s passed from grandmother to mother to daughter—like me—but also from grandmother to everyone. My older son is an exceptional cook. My younger one is getting there. Because this isn’t really about food at all.

It’s about experience.
It’s about family—biological and chosen.
It’s about values that go far beyond mere sustenance.

Italian cooking takes an ordinary task of daily survival and transforms it into something vibrant, connective, and joyful. It turns eating into living.
