Founded in 1991, the non-profit Montgomery County Council for the Arts (now known as the Gateway Regional Arts Center) is dedicated to promoting the arts and artists in Mt. Sterling and surrounding communities through programs and opportunities at its Gateway Regional Arts Center. It is supported by state and federal funding from the Kentucky Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts as

well as donations from friends of the arts. We have grown from a simple storefront gallery in 1997 to a 12,000 square foot multicultural center supported by dedicated membership of more than 1,000 individuals. The uniquely transformed building that has been a part of Mt. Sterling for generations as the former First United Methodist Church and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With the support of local and state government agencies, the Montgomery County Council for the Arts purchased the building in 2002 and began an ambitious $1.3 million renovation that was made possible with federal and state grants and the generosity of many local businesses and individuals. It formally opened as the Gateway Regional Arts Center on September 19, 2009 The resulting three-floor arts center now provides a large public performance hall, art gallery, gift shop, arts resource library, visual arts classrooms, music rehearsal rooms, artists studio space, offices and basement which includes a small performance cafe, dressing rooms and additional classrooms. Throughout the year, the Gateway Regional Arts Center provides monthly art shows in its gallery, as well as a variety of offerings in music, theater, and other visual arts. The Center also houses the Contemporary Kenyan Art Collection. A permanent exhibition that was a gift of The Ruth Hunt Wood Foundation. The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, provides operating support to the Gateway Regional Arts Center with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Today, we get to tell a story that means so much to this little town we call home. ❤️

At 2 PM today, The Sweet Life: The Ruth Hunt Story takes the stage at the Jerry Orbach Theater — a story about family, community, hard work, and a little piece of Mount Sterling history that has touched so many lives. From our first table read at GRAC, to the hometown stage our actors and director brought to life, and now all the way to New York City, Ruth's story has traveled farther than we ever could have imagined. What started here in Mount Sterling has become a story being shared far beyond our little corner of Kentucky, and we’re incredibly proud to have been part of it.

We are so grateful to Ruth Hunt Candies, to everyone who donated and helped bring this production to life, and to every member of the GRAC staff and cast who poured their time, talent, and heart into this story. And a very special thank you to Cat Rhoden Goguen, whose writing brought Ruth’s story to the stage and gave us the opportunity to share it with our community.

Most of all, thank you to our community. Thank you for showing up, believing in the arts, and reminding us why stories like this matter. In a small town, our stories are part of who we are — and getting to share one of them together is something pretty special.

To our cast and crew: break a leg! We’ll be cheering you on from back home. 🍀

And to everyone coming to the show today — we hope you laugh, maybe shed a tear, and leave feeling just a little more connected to the place we all call home.

Here’s to Ruth, to her story, and to the people who keep those stories alive. ❤️

Dolly Parton believed that every child should have the chance to grow up surrounded by books, imagination, and the joy of reading. Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, that belief has reached children and families in communities all over the world — including right here in our own community.

At GRAC, we’re honored to be a partner in carrying that gift forward. Since June of 2023, we've placed 60,559 into the hands of Montgomery County children, and with your help we can carry on Dolly's legacy so that number can continue to grow.

As we remember Dolly, we’re especially grateful for the countless stories she put into the hands of children, and for the reminder that something as simple as a book can open a whole new world.

Her legacy will live on in every child who turns a page and discovers somewhere new to go. ❤️📚
