We thought since we posted requesting assistance we would follow up and give you some statistics as to why we need help. But first we would like to thank the private citizens, churches and businesses that have already come forward to assist us. We could not continue to do this without the support of all our donors and our volunteers who work weekly to keep our pantry stocked.
Now to the numbers: In July we had 419 families with 894 household members that received assistance through our pantry. Forty-seven of those families were first visits. And as of today 8/21/26, we have already served 360 households with 740 household members this month. Twenty-nine of those are new households with this being their first visit with fifty-seven household members.
We do allow our families to visit our pantry two times each week and they can choose the food they want from what we have available within our set limits on items. The visits posted above do not count multiple visits. Please understand that a large number of our families do not have adequate refrigerator or freezer storage, and some only have either a microwave or hot plate and some do not have an oven to prepare food in. This is why we allow them to come so often.
We have a lot of families that may only come once a month or only if they absolutely have to. Do we have people that come that do not need to? It is NOT our place to decide if they need the food or not.
Where do we get most of the food?
We are partnered with God's Pantry Food Bank, and they assign stores to us to pick up food items from. We currently go to Lexington 3 times per week and pick up donations from Walmart, Target, The Fresh Market, Gordon Food Service, and the Liquor Barn (no, we do not get liquor) they have a deli in their store. We also pick up 5 days per week from our local Walmart, 7 Dollar Stores in our area (that provides most of our milk) and one time per week from Kroger. Most trips provide us with enough perishable items, frozen food items, milk, etc. to get through 1 week at a time, some weeks we do not get much like this week was a lean week and we were very limited on food items.
We also can purchase food items through a GP program called Agency Express that allows us to purchase items a lot cheaper than going to a grocery to purchase. But items are limited.
We also get donations of shelf stable items from food drives from Churches, businesses and other organizations throughout the year with the schools doing a large food drive every year when school starts back up that runs through the week prior to Thanksgiving.
We have been extremely fortunate, especially this year as we have a person who wants no recognition that has kept us in fresh vegetables this year so far. He gets up early to work in his garden, picks the fruits of his labor, and delivers to us at least two times each week. Sometimes three. He has been a Blessing to us.
We have farmers that bring us fresh eggs several times each month.
So as you can see, this pantry is a Community Pantry and Together We Feed More. We appreciate everything that everyone does to help us in any way.
Please forgive me if I left something out, but I hope the information has helped some.
