Today, our career firefighters, new recruits, and volunteer members had the opportunity to participate in an acquired structure burn, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a realistic fireground environment.

Training opportunities like this are invaluable. They allow our firefighters to sharpen their skills, build confidence, strengthen teamwork, and prepare for the challenges they may face on real emergency scenes. There is no substitute for live-fire training when it comes to developing the knowledge and experience needed to protect our community.

A special thank you to the Kentucky Fire Commission, SFRT Area 9 & 15, and all of the participating fire departments who helped make this training possible. Your continued support, instruction, and partnership are essential in helping us provide the highest level of service to the citizens we serve.

Preparation and training are essential to keeping our community safe.

Yesterday, members of Montgomery County Firefighters IAFF Local 4805, our newest recruit class, and firefighters from our volunteer roster participated in an active shooter training exercise at Camargo Elementary. This valuable training provided an opportunity for first responders to strengthen coordination, communication, and response capabilities in a realistic environment.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Camargo Elementary for opening your doors and helping make this training possible. We also appreciate the outstanding partnership and teamwork from the Mount Sterling Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and Montgomery County School Resource Officers.

A special thank you goes to our volunteer participants who helped create realistic training scenarios. Your willingness to volunteer your time plays a vital role in making these exercises as effective as possible.

Training together today helps us respond together tomorrow. We are grateful for the partnerships that continue to strengthen our preparedness and our commitment to protecting Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Fire/EMS. Mount Sterling, KY
Firefighter/Paramedic Wells worked his shift on May 5, 2017, from 0800hrs to 1600hrs. During his shift, he complained to a fire department member that he was experiencing numbness in his mouth. Immediately before leaving the station at the end of his shift, he complained to his chief that he had a headache and did not feel well. The following day, May 6, 2017, at approximately 1400hrs, Firefighter/Paramedic Wells was still not feeling well and went to a medical clinic, but returned home since he started to feel slightly better. Soon thereafter, his wife came home and found him unresponsive on the couch and not breathing. His wife initiated CPR and Firefighter/Paramedic Wells was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Mount Sterling, where he was pronounced deceased.

Members from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Battalion recently participated in Vehicle Extrication training, sharpening the skills needed to safely and efficiently remove victims during emergency incidents. Training opportunities like these help ensure our crews remain prepared for the challenges they may face in the field.

Yesterday, members of First Shift had the opportunity to spend some time in the community, firing up the grill and cooking steaks for the seniors at the high school. It was a great way to connect, share some laughs, and show our appreciation for the next group getting ready to take on the world. We’re always grateful for chances like this to give back and be part of moments that matter

Today, another one of our older ambulances left for our remounting company in NC. This ambulance had over 400,000 miles on it! The box will be taken off, repainted and repaired on the inside, and then placed on a new chassis. It will come back to us in August as a frontline ambulance. This process saves us nearly $200,000 dollars if we were to buy an entire new ambulance.
