Robert Haynes served district from 1986- 1990; established spring musical

By Tom Marshall
Senior Advocate writer
Former Montgomery County Schools Superintendent Robert Haynes died Saturday at a nursing home in Louisville. He was 92.

Haynes served as superintendent here from 1986 to 1990.

During that time he established the spring musical at Montgomery County School, which now bears his name. Following his retirement he founded the Montgomery County Education Foundation, which brought in several esteemed public speakers for both the public and teaching staff.

Former colleagues said Haynes was a “teacher’s teacher,” who moved the district forward during a time of major transition brought on by the Kentucky Education Reform Act.

Dr. Edward Roberts, who served as chairman of the board of education during Haynes’ tenure, called him one of the best superintendents Montgomery County has ever had.

“He was instrumental in pushing our school district forward in a really progressive fashion,” Roberts said.

David Points, who served as principal at MCHS while Haynes was superintendent, said Haynes was always “a step ahead of the game when it came to education.”

Public education, according to Points, “was his calling. He was just great at education.”

So when KERA came around, Haynes was more than prepared to meet the challenge, Points said.

“Education was changing so rapidly at the time and he was at the forefront of it,” Points said. “... He was patient and was going to make sure that every opportunity for teachers to improve were provided.”

And Haynes’ belief in education extended beyond his role as superintendent and continued after his retirement with the education foundation.

Through the foundation, Haynes raised thousands of dollars to support public education beyond what government tax dollars could provide, Points said.

Points recalled that Haynes had no limit when it came to providing resources for the district’s teachers through his extensive list of professional contact.

Haynes was a strong believer in teacher education, Points said, which was illustrated during his tenure when he brought in Madeline Hunter for in service by introducing them to cutting edge techniques.

Points said Haynes also believed in making the district’s resources available to the community as a whole.

He added that Haynes was a loving and caring person who served his community through other organizations such as the Kiwanis Club or the Chamber of Commerce.

Haynes remained active in the community for many years after his retirement and stayed in regular contact with many former colleagues and friends.

Louise Summers, who worked with Haynes in several capacities over the years, said he was a progressive thinker who always had a smile on his face. “He always wanted the best for the kids who attended public schools in Montgomery County,” she said. “He always wanted the best for Montgomery County.”

Points said Haynes, who grew up in Whitesburg and also served as a superintendent in Virginia, was a loving and caring person who went out of his way to help anyone who needed it regardless of whether they were involved in public education or not.

Current Superintendent Matt Thompson issued a statement concerning Haynes following the announcement that he had passed.

“Dr. Haynes has been described as a visionary and an advocate for students,” Thompson said. “He was the founder of the Montgomery County Education Foundation and helped establish summer enrichment opportunities for students as well as beginning a speaker series for the community, which brought in speakers such as astronauts, internationally acclaimed artists and representatives from the Smithsonian Museums.

“His legacy in the school system can still be seen today in the ‘Recognition Center’ hallway at MCHS and through the opportunities our students have through the arts including the MCHS musical, which still bears his name,” Thompson added. “On behalf of Montgomery County Schools, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Dr. Robert Haynes.”

Taul Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete at press time.
