MSHS Track update for Jackson Chase

What a weekend it was down in Clovis at the State Track and Field Championships. The weather was very kind with it being in the high 70s, low 80s and partly cloudy.
There were over 1,500 athletes from nearly 500 different High School from all over California! The announcer kept saying this is the best High School Track Meet in the Country. And there is a lot of support behind that statement as California is one of the only states that has a True State Championship, meaning there is no divisional breakdown at the State level. It doesn't matter if you are from McCloud High with a handful of students or from Bakersfield High School with over 3,000 kids or from a Private high school that recruits athletes, you all compete on the same playing field. This brings the absolute best of the best from the entire state to compete against each other on the same track on the same day. And arguably the best in the country as there were multiple top 10 National performances this year set at this meet and many top 5 and even a couple National leaders set at the meet.

With that said, it is an incredible achievement to make it to this level and Jackson was able to return to compete in the 400m for his second year.

Track is a very long season, we started pre-season practices on January 6th, and Jackson started his training even well before that. With a long season, leaves a lot of room for setbacks and challenges to overcome, which I have talked about before Jackson, with his knee and not so well timed sicknesses, but he continued to show up, stay focused and stay consistent and perform the best he could each day.

When Friday came around, Jackson was ready, confident. He wanted that one more PR in one more race of his High School Career, and he went for it. He came through 200m as planned, right around 22.4/5 and charged the curve and came around to the straightaway and just hit a physical wall. He fought to the line and came across in 49.47. According to the clock, not his best race of the year (still his 13th time breaking 50 seconds), but his composer afterwards showed how much he has grown as an athlete these last few years, not just on a physical level but on the emotional level. After sitting on the grass and reflecting on his own he was able to rejoin us and had a very mature outlook. He learned somethings about his pre race preparation, he got another great experience competing at a high caliber, high stakes race and he is proud of what he accomplished along the way. The last race is not a definition of it all, just another piece. But that will not be his last race, Jackson is excited to now enjoy the last week of High School, take a physical and mental break from training, and reset and get ready to continue his career at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.

We are all proud of you Jackson and you made a lot of fans this year.

Hello Team!!!!

Yesterday we had 10 athletes compete at the Northern Section Finals for Track and Field down at West Valley High School.

We had
2 School Records!
1st Place Finish - State Qualifier!
2nd Place Finish!
3rd Place Finish!
Norm McKenzie Sportsmanship Athlete Award!

It was a HOT and sunny day, reaching over 100F at the beginning of the meet. Luckily there was a nice breeze for most of the meet, but still made some challenging conditions.

The meet started off at 3:15pm with the Girls 4x800m relay, where we had our first girls team to compete at this meet!

Girls 4x800m
We had Sadie Anderson lead off with one heck of a leg. She went for it, coming through 400 at 1:16, this was a bit fast for her, but she hung tough, dug deep and delivered the baton to Tallula in a PR of 2:55! Then Tallula Harnish ran (I would say) her best race of the season. She stayed patient on the first lap, sticking right behind a couple girls, coming through 400 at 1:32, but then found something she didn't know she had and kicked with 150 tp go and passed the baton to Anya, running a 3:00 split! That is a 1:28 second lap, and her first open 400 of the season was 1:24, She did this after already running 1 lap, what a race. Then Anya Biegalski got back on the track after about a month off due to a lower leg injury. And she went for it! She got the baton and the race was on, she came her first 400 in 1:22. Then the time off running hit, but she hung tough, draining her tank all the way to hand off to Emily. She hit a split of 3:14, which was right in the range she was running before her injury. Emily Clifford got the chance to run the 800 for the first time. She stepped up for her team so they would have a 4th girl to allow them to race. There was a plan for her to get the baton a fake an injury and jump off the track, but Emily committed to it and ran those 2 laps right around 3:30. She might have even been smiling while she did it. They came in 8th place as a team finishing in 12:42.
Awesome job ladies!

Girls Shot Put
Then while this was happening, Savannah Henson was over at the Shot Put earning her medal. Savannah was able to throw another amazing throw of 34' 8" to earn her 2nd Place! Unfortunately the only way to advance is to get 1st place, but this was a solid way for Savannah to cap off her High School Track Career.

National Anthem
Then something fun happened before the next races on the track. We had a group of 4 of our girls sing the National Anthem as a Quartet. That was Meski Chandler, Savannah Henson, Tallula Harnish, and Kaylie Kobseff. There is a video of this somewhere, I will share it when I get it. It was really fun to have Mount Shasta representation both on and off the track.

Boys 4x100m
Then our next race was the boys 4x100m. Liam McWilliams, Aiden Smith, Benny Gazave, and Jackson Chase put together their best race of the season and the best race in MSHS History!!!! They already had the school record, but they improved it by another 0.32 seconds. They will now have their names on the Record board with a 43.86 next to it. That is a record that will last awhile.

Boys 400m
Then Jackson Chase took the stage. Jackson has committed to the 400m since his Freshman year. His progression has gone 53.10 freshman year, 50.46 sophomore year, 48.50 Junior year and now 48.11 Senior Year!!!! After his race it said it only took him a full year to PR, but it couldn't have been a better race to do it in. And he got the W, which advances him to the State Championships next weekend at Buchanan High School down in Clovis. He also said he felt extremely smooth through the 200m mark (22.4) and that he has got an even better race in him saved for next week. Jackson currently has the 5th fastest 400m time in Northern Section History (these records date back to the '60s) and the record of 47.92 could be rewritten next week. Stay tuned.

Boys 4x400m
Then to cap it off for MSHS was the final race of the day, the Boys 4x400m Relay under the lights. Liam McWilliams lead off for the team with a solid 53.8 passing it off to Benny Gazave would ran another solid leg of 53.9. Then James DeArton, after waiting all day to race, ran his best 400m of his life, carrying the baton around the oval in 53.7! As James passed the baton off to Jackson they were in 5th place. Last year they placed 4th in this event. But they were determined to change that this year. Jackson passed Chico on the backstretch, then came up on Trinity on the curve and was chasing down West Valley on the Homestretch to get 3rd place with a Season best of 3:29.40! Jackson's final leg was a 47.8! Showing he has got more in him for next week.

This was an amazing performance for our small school to podium in a relay event 2 years in a row with 2 new athletes on the team. Way to go boys.

Then there was one more special thing that happened before we left.

Norm McKenzie Sportsmanship Award
Each year Coaches are able to nominate a male and female Senior Athlete that qualified for the Section Finals for the Norm McKenzie Sportsmanship Award. This award is to recognize an athlete for their exceptional display of sportsmanship and respect for other on and off the track towards teammates, competitors, officials and more. Then a Committee of coaches read all the nominations and vote on one winner each.
This year I nominated Jackson Chase and Savannah Henson, the first 2 athletes that I have had a pleasure to coach for 4 years! You all know these 2 and the genuine character they carry each day inside and out of the classroom and on the track and everywhere else.
This year the committee picked Jackson Chase as the Norm McKenzie Sportsmanship Athlete!
And Savannah Henson was a close second behind Dessa Whipple of Yreka HS.
I attached what I wrote about them if you would like to read.

I left this meet as a Very PROUD Coach!!!!!

ONE MORE THING
I would like to share. Our neighboring school, W**d High School, also had some great success. They had Freshman Libby Michels get 4th in High Jump (4'10"), Junior Audrey Mayberry get 2nd in Discus (109') and Sophomore Ahmani Collins WIN the Long Jump (18'1") 100m (11.85) and 200m (24.64). She is going to State in 3 events! And she got awarded the Bob Russell MVP Female Athlete Award.

Great Representation form MSHS and WHS at Section Finals yesterday!

Have a Great Memorial Day Weekend!
