Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center We work to preserve, protect, and restore the Mount Shasta bioregion- Since 1988! Funding comes from local donors, fundraising events, and foundation grants.

MSBEC works through public education, science-based public policy and advocacy, restoration, watershed monitoring, forest stewardship - and legal challenges when needed. We engage the local community and its leaders to connect with and protect our bioregion. We have persevered for nearly 30 years through the dedicated efforts of numerous volunteers, staff, and board members and the support of the

local community and foundations who believe in our cause. We are rooted in the local community and take action through our own campaigns and by supporting citizens’ groups through fiscal sponsorship. We are unafraid to take on the big battles and we’re in it for the long haul.

We had a great time in Redding this weekend making seed balls with native seeds at the Biodiversity Day event put on by Western Shasta RCD 🙌🥳

Join us and Siskiyou Land Trust this Wednesday at 6pm at the Mt. Shasta Library to learn more about how to use iNaturalist and to participate in a local bioblitz! Hope to see you there and stay tuned for more biodiversity week content! 🐝🌱🐞

Action Alert! Wild, roadless forests are under attack! -

Last year, the Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, announced that the administration aimed to rescind the Roadless Rule, stating that the rescission would help prevent and reduce wildfires, which is a red herring. More than 600,000 comment letters were submitted, with 99% against the repeal.

The USDA opened a 30-day comment period as it moved forward to rescind the Roadless Rule, a longstanding policy that protects backcountry forests from new road building and large-scale logging. If finalized, the 45 million acres of National Forests will lose protections, including thousands of acres that surround us here in the Mount Shasta bioregion - we mention only four above, but there are more!

Beyond clean water & air, critical wildlife habitat, and biodiversity, these roadless forests are the backbone of a $1.3 trillion outdoor recreation economy that supports local economies, like ours, with over 5 million jobs across the country.

We have until Sept 21 to defend the rule. Stay tuned for our emailed action alert with tips on how to submit your comment letter, dates for a letter-writing workshop, and other developing details.
