From a high school requirement to a future in senior advocacy. ✨
For the past four years, Joanna Al Hijjaj has been a familiar face and a bright light at Eskaton Village Roseville. What started as a way to fulfill school service hours quickly blossomed into a deep, life-shaping passion for connecting with older adults.

Her dedication to our community has extended far beyond her weekly visits. As a leader in her high school's Interact Club, Joanna helped coordinate larger student volunteer efforts, connecting more youth with our residents for meaningful one-on-one interactions. She has also used her platform in the Lions Speech Competition to advocate for senior volunteerism, encouraging her peers to meet people where they are.

During her time with us, Joanna truly mastered the art of being present, whether she was sitting with a resident to chat about crocheting, helping someone paint, or simply listening to their stories.

"Volunteering taught me patience, empathy, and the importance of being present, " says Joanna. "I learned that small moments really do make huge impacts—sometimes simply sitting with someone and listening is enough."

For Joanna, this work has been deeply personal. Volunteering has helped her feel closer to the memory of her grandfather, explaining, "I didn’t know my grandfather for very long, and volunteering with seniors helped me feel closer to him. Being around older adults, listening to their stories, and sharing time with them was really meaningful for me."

What's next for Joanna? She is officially headed to UC Berkeley to study Political Science! Her ultimate goal is to attend law school and work at the California State Capitol, focusing on healthcare law and fiercely advocating for seniors. 🐻🎓

This week, Eskaton leaders are touching down at the LeadingAge California BOLD Annual Conference & Expo on May 19-22. 💡👋

📸 Residents of Eskaton Village Grass Valley got the full glam treatment for their formal portraits, proving that magic happens when history meets the next generation!

🖼️ Eskaton Land Park unleashed their inner Picassos with the art instructor Lizzy, turning a spring painting lesson into a full-blown gallery opening!

🍰 Eskaton Village Placerville's final Kids Connection wrapped up in the sweetest way possible, thanks to some amazing fifth graders who brought cake, big smiles, and the ultimate intergenerational friendship goals!

☀️ Eskaton Gold River traded the indoors for the patio as live tunes and sunshine turned a spring afternoon into the ultimate open-air concert!

🧠 We went full-on futuristic with REACT Neuro CEO Shaun Patel, testing out a cutting-edge virtual reality platform that reads eye-tracking and voice data to give our brains a personalized check-up!

🐎 Residents rocked the winner’s circle for Kentucky Derby Day, proving that Southern charm and high-fashion fascinators are always a "First Place" combination!

🍹 Over 60 guests joined Eskaton Granite Bay's Cinco de Mayo margarita tasting, proving that great drinks, lively music, and meaningful connections are the ultimate recipe for an unforgettable afternoon!

♻️ Our eco-hero Neela leveled up our sustainability game by treating the team to reusable lunch kits, making it easier to ditch single-use plastics!

🪅 Our Cinco de Mayo fiesta brought the house down with a spectacular live mariachi band and a mouthwatering feast that had everyone celebrating culture, flavor, and friendship in style!

From surviving outside to finally having a place to call home, we are so honored to welcome Stan to the Eskaton family! 🏠✨

After a long journey and a patient wait, Stan Mowatt (pictured left) recently opened the door to his very own apartment at Eskaton Lincoln Manor, our affordable housing community in Placerville. Thanks to the incredible support of local advocates like Dr. Mitchell Goodis (pictured right) and the dedicated team at Lincoln Manor, Stan is trading the uncertainty of the streets for the security, warmth, and community he deserves.

At Eskaton, we believe every senior should have a safe place to rest their head. We are proud to operate thirteen affordable housing communities throughout Northern California for seniors living on fixed or limited incomes, making quality housing accessible to those who need it most.

Teamwork makes the dream work! 🛠️🍔 Last Saturday, we hosted a "Clean Up and Cook Out" at Eskaton Jefferson Manor, and the transformation was incredible! Thanks to a massive donation of services from Junk King, we cleared out the clutter and opened up fresh, accessible shared spaces for our residents to enjoy.

Our amazing volunteers didn't just roll up their sleeves—they brought the heart. The day was filled with connection, hard work, and a whole lot of smiles.

To celebrate, West Coast Fire & Water treated us to an epic BBQ! Their team spent an entire week curating a menu specifically for our residents, proving that a great meal is the ultimate way to bring people together.

On this World Mental Health Day, we want to recognize the Executive Directors and Social Service Coordinators of our Affordable Housing communities who took the initiative to expand their mental health education and learn strategies to assist residents through tough situations. We are proud to announce that the entire group completed five hours of mental health training through Psych Hub and received their Mental Health Ally Certificate!
