Shuffle ball changeโ€ฆ from the comfort of a chair! ๐Ÿ‘ฏโ€โ™‚๏ธโœจ
Our residents at Eskaton Gold River just wrapped up their very first Chair Tap Class, and safe to say, we have some natural rhythm makers in the house!

Led by Kristin Stuhr, Impact and Fundraising Coordinator for the Eskaton Foundation and former professional dancer, residents learned the basics of tap through seated percussive footwork and expressive movement. Not only did they learn a full 1-minute routine in just 45 minutes, but they also got a fantastic brain and body workout (hello balance, coordination, and mood boost!). ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ช

Reflecting on the class, Kristin shared, "Teaching at an event hosted by the Eskaton Foundation gave me the opportunity to share my love of dance with residents, creating meaningful moments of connection, joy, and community which are essential. It also empowered me to bring my whole self to work, embracing my passions and authentic personality as part of how I make a difference."

The big question from residents? "When is the next class?!"

We believe creativity knows no age limit. Particularly at The Reutlinger, our renowned art program has long been a place of expression, joy, and connection. Today, we are thrilled to introduce the newest guide on our artistic journey: our new Art Director, Ashot Melkumov.

Ashot joins us with an extraordinary 26-year career as a premier Concept Artist in the gaming industry. After graduating from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, he started at LucasArts (the studio famous for Star Wars, now called Lucasfilm Games) in 1999, spending five wonderful years there.

"Within a month after leaving LucasArts, I joined Electronic Arts," Ashot recalls. "And at first, I was working on The Sims games." He spent nearly nine years at EA - Electronic Arts, thriving in its highly collaborative environment, before working with Disney Interactive, Machine Zone, and Zynga Inc.

After more than two decades of bringing digital worlds to life, Ashot felt a calling to shift his focus to teaching. "The more experience I gained, the more I felt the urge to share my knowledge," Ashot says. "I realized I love sharing... By sharing the knowledge, I found out, I have learned even more!"

Ashot first learned about the Art Director role through a friend at The Reutlinger. When he interviewed, he was in awe of the tremendous artwork created by our senior residents. "I want to work with these people and see what I can achieve with them," he thought at the time.

Just as he thrived on collaboration in major studios, Ashot is excited to learn from our resident artists. To anyone hesitant to pick up a brush, he offers warm encouragement. "I understand people can be skeptical of what they can do," he says. "But it's never too late. My hope is to involve as many residents as possible to come to class, to experiment, to experience, and to enjoy."

Please join us in giving Ashot a warm welcome!

๐ŸŽ‰ Celebrating a true community legend! ๐ŸŽ‰ After 75 remarkable years of membership and service, resident Bob Cole was recently honored by the Sacramento Rotary Club and featured in The Sacramento Bee.

๐Ÿ Big news! Weโ€™re welcoming some very buzz-worthy new neighbors to The Reutlinger and Eskaton Land Park. We are thrilled to announce our brand new partnership with Beewise Technologies and the launch of our own pollinator program: Bees for Buildings!

Bringing nature directly into our campus by hosting these smart hives allows us to make a tangible, measurable contribution to local sustainability.

This is an initiative deeply tied to our core values. As our Life Enrichment Director, Amy J. Mallor, beautifully shares: "At The Reutlinger, we honor Jewish tradition by embracing values that inspire us to care for one another and the world around us. One of these values is Tikkun Olam, the responsibility to help repair and sustain our world through acts of kindness, stewardship, and compassion."

This isnโ€™t your average backyard beekeeping; it is a powerful blend of innovation and nature. We are utilizing Beewise's incredible BeeHomeโ„ขโ€”a holistic, AI- and robotics-powered solution that acts as a real-time, remote guardian for the colonies.

With temperature control, honey level tracking and more, this proven technology has already pollinated over 250,000 acres globally, and bringing it to our campus allows us to use our space as stewards of our local ecosystem.

By supporting these urban pollinators, we are bringing biodiversity back into the built environment and creating a healthier ecological footprint for our entire neighborhood.

Looking ahead at the positive impact this initiative will bring, Amy J. Mallor adds: "May our bee home bring beauty to our community, remind us of our responsibility to care for creation, and inspire us to live the values of Tikkun Olam each and every day."

We are incredibly proud to step forward as leaders in innovative environmental care. Stay tuned for updates on our new buzzing friends, educational workshops, and (of course) some delicious, hyper-local honey in the future! ๐Ÿฏ

Join us in giving a warm, sweet welcome to BeeWise!

Partnering with Pride! ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆโœจ We believe that aging well means living authentically in a space where you are seen, valued, and celebrated. That is why we are proud to highlight our partnership with Servant Hearts, a dedicated non-profit organization supporting and providing vital resources to LGBTQ+ seniors in the greater Sacramento area.

Founded in 2013 by Cathy Perry and Tandy Bowman (pictured), the Awareness & Empowerment Projects of Servant Hearts was created to provide programming dedicated to the older LGBTQ+ population, which they felt was missing from community spaces. Over the years, Servant Hearts has continued to design spaces for LGBTQ+ seniors, including monthly discussion groups, an Annual Senior Pride Information & Resource Fair, a regular Friday night Cafรฉ with live music in Midtown, and an annual Fall Picnic in Placerville.

The journey that brought Servant Hearts to Eskaton is a beautiful testament to shared values and advocacy. In 2025, Tandy and Cathy worked with Eskatonโ€™s Director of Partnerships, Cynthia Driver, to coordinate a Senior Pride Resource Fair at Eskaton Village Carmichael. That successful event opened the door to further collaboration. Today, Eskaton Land Park hosts a bimonthly Elder LGBTQA+ Conversations & Coffee meet-up group, providing an ongoing inclusive gathering space. As Cathy notes: "It has worked out wonderfully to meet at Land Park where we always feel welcomed and invited to participate [in] their events.โ€

With distinct challenges facing older LGBTQ+ adults, including greater isolation and lack of representation, the core of Servant Hearts' mission has always been to foster direct human connection. As Cathy beautifully puts it: "Our current goal is to provide on-going opportunities for older LGBTQ+ people to gather in person for conversations, to gain insight into safe and welcoming services and providers, to stay well informed about the world and city they live in, and to participate to the extent to which they feel comfortable. Peer friendships as we age are vitally important to our well-being."

We are honored to stand alongside Servant Hearts by providing a safe, encouraging space for these conversations to thrive. We look forward to many more years of shared stories, support, and peer connection at Eskaton Land Park through Servant Heartsโ€™ LGBTQA+ Conversations & Coffee group! ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆโœจ

, short for June nineteenth, is a federal US holiday observed today on June 19. Also referred to as , Juneteenth marks the anniversary of General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865, which informed the remaining enslaved Africans in the Southern US (held illegally captive after the Emancipation Proclamation) of their freedom. On Juneteenth, we commemorate the end of slavery and celebrate those who fought to abolish it in our nation.
