Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation

Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation A farm for conservation, education, and preservation in the heart of Allegany County, MD. In 2008, At Evergreen, we transformed our property in Mt.

The Evergreen Heritage Center (EHC), located on approximately 130 acres of “Federal Hill” in the heart of Allegany County, is an historic Maryland farm and estate that pre-dates the Revolutionary War. Savage, Maryland, into an outdoor classroom for experiential education (also known as "hands-on" learning). Currently, our award-winning programs annually reach over 5,000 youth and adults in Western

Maryland. Our approach to education creates learning excitement, improves learning retention, promotes active science exploration, and encourages interest in STEM careers. In a region where many families struggle to get by, it’s the type of education that breaks the cycle of poverty. Evergreen was awarded the 2016 Entrepreneurial Spirit Award from the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, the 2015 Maryland Sustainable Growth Award for Preservation and Conservation, the 2015 Richard A. Johnson Award for Excellence in Environmental Education, and the 2014 Chesapeake Forest Champion Award for Sustainable Forestry Education. Our farm and estate includes the Evergreen mansion (now a museum), the Evergreen Barn (the last remaining 18th century barn in Western Maryland), beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens, trails, streams, and forest, all in a picturesque setting adjacent to the Great Allegheny Passage and Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The EHC is ten minutes from the town of Frostburg, twenty minutes from the city of Cumberland, and roughly two hours from either Washington D.C., Baltimore, or Pittsburgh.
