Future of Film & Media Conference was always imagined as a global platform to support our community and cultural partners.

We are pleased to announce our promotional partnership with the NEW AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL (NAFF), presented by the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center and Africa World Now Project

Now in its 22nd season, NAFF brings the vibrancy of African filmmaking from all corners of the continent and across the diaspora to the Washington, DC, area.

Special thanks to NAFF co-founders Mwiza Munthali and Judy Mbuya, and media sponsor WPFW.

“I had crossed the line. I was free; but there was no one to welcome me to the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land; and my home after all, was down in Maryland; because my father, my mother, my brothers, and sisters, and friends were there. But I was free, and they should be free.”

WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS?
“Initially, we wrote without structure, freely expressing our unique voices and sharing our scripts in both English, Amharic, and Trinbagonian Patois receiving constructive feedback that informed our revisions.

Through this process, we learned scriptwriting concepts like the art of “showing, and not telling,” a form of visualization that brought our stories to life. Two to three times a week, we were immersed in classic American and international films, which we analyzed and critiqued as a class. We focused on the director’s intent, use of lighting, sound, camera positioning, and editing techniques, all of which sharpened our understanding of cinematic storytelling.

As we grew closer through weekly sessions, a collaborative energy emerged, leading to a scriptwriting challenge. Drawing on the storytelling skills we had developed, we wrote our own unique individual stories and the selected script culminated in a collective film project. This exercise birthed “A People’s Story,” marking a pivotal moment in our workshop.”
