It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Charles David Hamberger, SGM US Army (Ret.), who passed on September 23, 2026.

SGM Hamberger was the revered Past Commander of American Legion Post 903 in Mount Pocono. He leaves behind a monumental legacy defined by 33 years of dedicated service to the United States Army and an enduring commitment to his fellow veterans.

As a Private First Class serving with the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, Charlie fought in the legendary Battle of Ia Drang (November 14–18, 1965)—the war's first major clash between U.S. and North Vietnamese forces. At Landing Zone X-Ray, heavily outnumbered and completely surrounded, Allied forces held the line for three agonizing days through extraordinary valor. Among them, PFC Hamberger single-handedly braved severe enemy fire to secure an escape route for his platoon. He miraculously survived the onslaught after the powerful concussion of an artillery shell blast threw him over 70 feet through the air.

Upon retiring from the military, Charlie brought that same fierce devotion home to Pennsylvania, guiding local service members as our Commander. It was a distinct privilege to stand alongside him at public community events, and his absence leaves a void that cannot be filled.

May he rest in eternal peace.
