📚 “My journey into special education began with my mother, a pre-K special ed teacher,” reflects Dr. Alice Williams. “Volunteering in her classroom sparked my love for this field. My path as a speech-language pathologist and classroom teacher led me to pursue a doctorate so I could support students and future educators.”

Today, Dr. Williams is transforming how students with extensive support needs (ESN) engage with reading, focusing on literacy for non-verbal students who use AAC systems. “Traditional curricula often overlook non-verbal students’ needs. I’m committed to equipping them with tools to become confident readers.”

Her recent research on reading interventions was published in the Journal of Special Education, and she’ll be presenting her findings at ASHA this December. “Watching students thrive and teachers inspired is my proudest achievement.”

Protecting Our Waterways for Freshwater Mollusks!

Meet Dr. David Zanatta and Dr. Daelyn Woolnough from CMU! Their work focuses on conservation, genetics, and ecosystem recovery, providing students with hands-on experiences in real-world environments—often involving scuba diving!

🔬 "We study their genetics in the Zanatta Lab and response to ecosystem changes in the Woolnough lab to, together, understand how ecosystems change over time," says Dr. Zanatta. Together, they’re helping protect Michigan’s waterways and foster a cleaner, healthier future.

Faculty Friday! Here’s what Dr. Vendette suggests for enhanced productivity …

“Hello, I'm Dr. Sebastien Vendette, and I am a professor from the Management Department. At the start of every semester, I encourage my students to set up a dedicated study space because it improves their focus and enhances their productivity. It is crucial for this space to be free from distractions, and to be equipped only with important course content, to reduce the likelihood of turning a great work session into a 6-hour YouTube watching marathon leading to last-minute cramming and stress. Such a dedicated study space is valuable because it removes students from the other chaotic elements of student life and allows them an opportunity to allocate their time more effectively. By setting up a dedicated study space, students can develop systematic learning strategies, which will prepare them for academic and professional success.”

Faculty Friday! Here’s some words from Dr. Catherine Helmuth on starting your semester right …

“Greetings, my name is Dr. Catherine Helmuth, and I am a faculty member in the Management Department. I normally begin every semester by reminding my students to set aside time to review their upcoming academic schedule as well as their time management provisions. As part of this process, I encourage my learners to prioritize their physical and mental health. For example, some students find it helpful to maintain positive social relationships, exercise frequently, and sleep regularly whereas others find incorporating stress-relief practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and yoga into their routines to be more efficient. There is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ strategy for sustaining a successful work-life balance; however, a healthy body contributes to a sharp mind, leading to a more productive and enjoyable learning experience.”

Dr. Xantha Karp's research on stem cell health at CMU is advancing developmental biology and medicine. By studying tissue-specific stem cells, she's uncovering insights into maintaining stem cell health as they age, crucial for combating aging and understanding cancer.

Her work with C. elegans, a microscopic nematode with human-like genes, has significantly contributed to our understanding of human health and disease. These genes are pivotal for mammalian stem cells and cancer research. Dr. Karp's collaboration with Dr. Stave Kohtz at CMED, focusing on a gene involved in breast cancer, shows how findings in C. elegans can be applied to human health.

Dr. Karp's research on the gene network controlling stem cell health during quiescence underscores the critical role of basic research in medical advancements. Her team, including both undergraduate and graduate students at CMU, exemplifies the collaborative spirit of scientific discovery, working closely with other CMU faculty and external institutions to push the boundaries of our understanding of stem cells and their potential impact on human health.
