Happy Juneteenth—also known as Freedom Day!

Juneteenth marks the day when U.S. General Gordon Granger and his federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

After the Civil War ended in the spring of 1865, General Granger’s arrival in Galveston that June signaled freedom for Texas’s 250,000 enslaved people. That December, slavery in America was formally abolished with the adoption of the 13th Amendment. Juneteenth marks an effective end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.

There is still time to sign up for the first HSM Experience Day of 2026! Spend a meaningful day with us exploring powerful stories and history at the The Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills on July 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants will engage with exhibits including the temporary exhibit "Age of Influence: Youth & N**i Propaganda," experience a docent-led tour, hear from a Next Generation speaker, and take part in a hands-on artifact learning session that deepens understanding of Holocaust history and personal narratives. The day also includes time for reflection, connection, and exploration of the museum space. A certified kosher lunch will be provided.

Please note: all attendees must arrange their own travel and meet at the museum by the start time. It is $89 for HSM members and $129 for nonmembers—each nonmember registration includes a 1-year HSM membership. Sign up today at https://hsmichigan.org/form/experience-day-zekelman
