This is so cool!

We are pleased to announce a new resource all about the history of Mt. Pleasant -- the "Historical Mount Pleasant in Postcards" site.

This web exhibit, providing researchers with free access to over 100 Postcards, is in memory of J. Hudson "Hud" Keenan, a Mount Pleasant native, CMU alum, accomplished historian, and an avid lover of postcards. After his passing earlier this year, many who held Hud near and dear honored his legacy with generous donations to CMU in his memory, and those donations supported scanning the postcards and creating this website.

With ample descriptions providing historical context about each snapshot, this site will be invaluable for those curious about Michigan's Oil Capital!

Pictured is a postcard, scanned as part of the Hud Keenan Memorial Postcard Project, depicting passengers and carriages waiting at the Mount Pleasant Railroad Station, a stop on the Ann Arbor Railroad. Since 1996, the building has operated as the privately-owned Mountain Town Station restaurant.

For the past two weeks, Whitefish Point has been experiencing an invasion of Type 2 Red Crossbills, with a small number of Type 4s mixed in! Across North America, Red Crossbills are divided into 12 distinct “call types,” each with subtle differences in range, appearance, and conifer preferences.

Their movements are unpredictable, often following the availability of cone crops. Plan a trip this fall to Whitefish Point to enjoy some exciting Red Crossbill action!

Bird migration is already starting to increase across the United States. Over the next several weeks, we expect to see Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds begin their trek southward for the winter season.

Join us at the Mill Pond Park pavilion on September 1st from 9am to 3pm for the kickoff of our Parks for Pollinators 2026: Chippewa River BioBlitz. This is the start of a month-long initiative to document pollinator species in our parks, as well as parks throughout the nation.

Using the iNaturalist app, you can simply take pictures of a pollinator (bee, butterfly, bat, etc.) or plant, and the online community on iNaturalist will help identify the species.

For the entire month of September, any iNaturalist observation you make in Chipp-A-Waters Park, Mill Pond Park, Nelson Park, and Island Park will automatically track for the BioBlitz.

Hummingbirds are making their way south!

Each fall, these tiny dynamos travel thousands of miles from breeding habitats across Canada and the United States to nonbreeding grounds in Central America. Along the way, they rely on networks of flowering native plants and healthy habitat to fuel their journey.

If you want to help these little jewels on their journeys south, remember to keep your feeders clean! Use a 1:4 white sugar-to-water ratio and change the mixture every few days, especially in warmer weather. No one likes mold or ants ruining their food — hummingbirds included!
