Darkness to Light

Darkness to Light Darkness to Light is a global nonprofit empowering adults to protect children from sexual abuse.

We believe that protecting children is an adult’s responsibility, and that through education and training, adults will be empowered to act. We envision a world in which adults form prevention-oriented communities that protect the child’s right to a healthy childhood. Our work empowers adults and organizations to bring best-practices in child safety to their own communities. We do this through full

-service child protection training, research, and consulting. Our goal is to provide evidence-informed, culturally appropriate, comprehensive child safeguarding support. We leverage cutting-edge research, award-winning training, and a consultative process to ensure our clients reach their desired outcomes.

Summer routines change and so do children’s online habits. ☀️💙

More free time online can mean more opportunities for connection, but also more opportunities for risk.

Staying involved does not have to start with fear. Sometimes it starts with simply staying curious, asking questions, and keeping communication open. Small conversations now can make a big difference later.

CSAM stands for child sexual abuse material. This term refers to any visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct involving a minor, including photos, videos, or explicit messages. CSAM is illegal and should always be reported.

As technology evolves, so do the risks children face online. AI generated exploitation, manipulated images, and deepfake content have made digital safety conversations even more important. Many adults may not realize that altered or AI generated sexualized images involving minors still contribute to harm and exploitation.

Understanding what CSAM is and recognizing the growing risks online helps adults respond more responsibly and create safer digital environments for children.

If you encounter suspected CSAM online, report it to the CyberTipline at NCMEC.org.

Sleepovers can be fun, exciting childhood experiences. They can also be moments for adults to think proactively about safety. 💚

Creating safer environments does not mean leading with fear. It means leading with awareness, communication, and preparation.

Prevention starts with conversations many adults were never taught how to have. Talking about boundaries. Grooming. Body safety. Consent. Warning signs.

These conversations can feel uncomfortable, but discomfort cannot matter more than a child’s safety.

The truth is, when adults understand how abuse happens, we are far more equipped to recognize risks, interrupt harmful behaviors, and protect children before harm occurs.

“Once we understand that it takes a village to abuse a child, we can empower an army of adults in that same village to safeguard children.”

Organizations, schools, faith communities, and youth serving programs all play a role in prevention. Culture matters. Training matters. Adults willing to speak up matter.

Prevention begins long before a crisis. It begins with informed adults creating environments where children are protected and concerns are taken seriously.

Training works because awareness changes action. 💙

After completing the Stewards of Children® training, educators in Texas increased reporting of previously unrecognized abuse by 82% in the following year.

That means more children were seen. More warning signs were recognized. More adults stepped in.

Child sexual abuse prevention is not about fear. It’s about equipping everyday adults with the confidence to notice patterns, respond responsibly, and protect children before harm continues.

One trained adult can change the outcome for a child. Imagine what thousands can do.

Ages 5–8 are often when children start asking bigger questions about their bodies, relationships, and growing up. 💙

These conversations might feel awkward at first, but they matter. Creating a home where kids feel safe asking questions, talking openly, and learning about boundaries helps build trust and confidence as they grow.

At this age, children may begin to:
• Understand puberty and reproduction
• Develop stronger friendships
• Become more modest about privacy and nudity
• Ask questions about relationships and identity

Children are more likely to speak up when they know they will be believed, supported, and safe. Sometimes protection begins with small everyday moments: asking questions, listening without judgment, respecting boundaries, and reminding children, “You can tell me anything.”

You do not have to be a perfect parent or guardian to help protect a child. You just have to be willing to have the conversations, notice changes, and create a home where honesty feels safe. 💙

This is not happening somewhere else. It is happening in schools, neighborhoods, sports programs, faith communities, and homes across the country.

Children should not have to protect themselves from abuse. That responsibility belongs to adults.

Silence creates opportunities for harm. Action can help stop it. 💙

More than 80% of child sexual abuse happens in isolated, one-on-one situations. Prevention starts long before abuse occurs through the everyday choices adults make.

The Epstein case exposed more than one offender. It revealed what can happen when warning signs are ignored, boundaries are not enforced, and adults stay silent.

Children need informed adults who are willing to notice patterns, speak up, and take action. 💙
