"Generations passed through the doorway, each believing for a little while that the house belonged to them. Perhaps it was the other way around. The house kept them. It held their footsteps, their voices, their celebrations and their grief long after they were gone. An old house is much like an old family Bible. Its rooms are the pages, holding the stories of births and deaths, marriages and partings, celebrations and sorrow. Each generation adds its story before passing it on to the next. In the quiet of evening, as the house cools from the day’s heat, those memories seem to come alive. I see those who stood where others would later stand—worrying about many of the same things, dreaming many of the same dreams, loving their families, burying their loved ones, and celebrating new beginnings. I hear laughter and sorrow—the joy of a child on Christmas morning and the quiet grief of a spouse left behind. Someday every house becomes old. But as long as someone remembers those who lived there, its pages are never truly closed."
