Photos from the 3rd Annual MMIW/P Awareness walk. We walked through the Isabella Reservation on May 5th, 2026.
May 5th is “Red Dress Day.”
A day where Indigenous communities across the world assemble to call action on the violence of Indigenous people (women especially). Indigenous people are 10x more likely to experience violence than other groups.
We walk together to create awareness for the Global Epidemic of MMIW/P (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women/People).
That these violent crimes happening to this day, without justice.
We have a responsibility to protect our communities and our people. Some law enforcement have played a big part in not reporting these crimes to the authorities and media. On this day, we walk for our loved ones who lost the battle to this terrible injustice, we walk to call for action of being heard, we are Not Invisible.
We walk and share stories so our loved ones will never be forgotten. We live in an amazing community that was supportive and wanted to do their part by showing up to walk for MMIW. Many have lost ones close to them. It was a bit chilly, the sun started to come out as soon as we began to walk; a beautiful sunset to follow. It’s important to have support no matter where you are in life. We eat together to share connections and conversations. These are bonds that we hope continue to grow beyond the deepest depths, and grow into something special.
Miigwech to all who came, the singers who shared songs with us, Melinda Coffin, Helping Hands Doula, Tracy Kole, Mary Quigno who donated miijim and Biish (food & water), Brad Bennet, RedRum for their support, Paul Walker and Tim Walraven for the MMIW flag, Tribal Police for ensuring safety by escorting our group, various community members, and to those wore their red shirts even if they couldn’t attend.
From the bottom of our hearts, Miigwech to you all. 🫶🏽❤️ (Thank you)
