18th July marks the last bar on Nurse Catherine Pine's suffragette medal.

Each of the eleven bars on the medal represents a time that Pine cared for Emmeline Pankhurst on her various releases from prison following hunger strikes.

Suffragettes were released from prison when they became too weak from hunger strikes following the introduction of the The Prisoners (Temporary Discharge for Ill-Health) Act in April 1913, also known as the 'Cat and Mouse Act'. This allowed the women to recover their strength before being recalled to prison to complete their sentence.

You can see Nurse Catherine Pine's medal on display in the museum until 4th October 2026.

Friday, July 24th at 6pm: Hope in the Dharma with Guy Newland

CTBC is pleased and honored to host an evening with Guy Newland on Friday July 24th at 6 p.m. in person and on Zoom, where he will be speaking on Hope in the Dharma.

A long-time student of Jeffery Hopkins at the University of Virginia, Newland recently retired after 37 years as Professor of Religion at Central Michigan University.

His work focused on the Buddhist concept of emptiness as understood in the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He is an editor and translator of the three-volume Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, and an editor and translator of the Dalai Lama’s teachings on that text—From Here to Enlightenment.

He is also the author of several articles on Buddhist philosophy. His books on Buddhism include Introduction to Emptiness, The Two Truths, Appearance and Reality, and A Buddhist Grief Observed.

Tomorrow (April 14, 2026) at 10:30am EST, a meaningful commemoration at the U.S. Capitol honoring the late Ben Ferencz (1920-2023), who labored tirelessly for International peace and justice. The commemoration will involve a Congressional Gold Medal being awarded (posthumously) to Ben around 11:00am. Members of his family will be there to receive it on his behalf.
