Important information regarding the Recreation Referendum is below. The bottom line is that it will cost folks less than expected and we have earned almost $1 million in interest, which is a surplus from what we owe thanks to the favorable interest rate that we received. Thank you for supporting this investment into the future of our town! Don’t let people use parks and recreation as a way to divide our community.
Great news came out of last night’s Mount Pleasant Town Council meeting. The first is that the financial impact of the Recreation Referendum will be even less than expected: $55 per $500,000 in assessed home value versus the $80 that residents were told before the vote. Secondly, because the town issued the bonds before interest rate hikes, we have actually earned more interest income ($970,000 in interest) than we owe. And finally, the town’s finance director said it is possible that the town could pay off the park and other recreation improvements in as early as 10 years instead of the 15 years that we issued the bonds for.
Finally, I want to say one more thing. The Vote Parks campaign was made up of many people both in this photo and not in this photo. I worked hard to get this group together and to educate voters about Rifle Range park, new tennis courts at Whipple, renovations to the indoor pool and additional bike paths. These are improvements for our town that will benefit generations to come and I am proud to have been involved! This is a testament to the amount of work I will put in as a Town Councilman.
