Hearts Like Dogs

Located in Southern New Jersey, Paws Give Me Purpose is a Sanctuary providing a bridge of care that supports senior, hospice and special needs dogs for whatever quality time remains for them.

A couple of days ago, we received an urgent plea from one of our shelter partners to help a dog who in the most horrific condition was left tied to a dumpster.

When she arrived at the shelter, she suffered from a severe a**l infection and literal bugs in her a**s, along with a host of other underlying concerns including a heart murmur.

We rushed into action and Ella was immediately taken in for emergency care. Her condition was beyond heartbreaking, and her medical needs are critical. She has received the necessary urgent care including diagnostic testing, and has begun treatments for the effects of her prolonged neglect.

In addition to being emaciated, and anemic from being starved almost to death, she has a UTI from bladder stones and a mass of unknown origin in her lower abdomen that will require further investigation.

The horror, neglect and cruelty of someone allowing Ella to live this way is difficult to comprehend, and then leaving her to die tied to a dumpster. Have we as humans lost all sense of decency?!

For now, Ella is safe here with us at Paws Give Me Purpose, she is on a strict refeeding schedule, and taking her medications like a champ.

Before any further testing can begin she needs to get stronger, and healthier, so that is our current mission. All she wants is to be loved; she most certainly did not deserve what has happened to her.

Once again, we are starting this new week with very full, grateful hearts. There is nothing like celebrating a birthday here at Paws Give Me Purpose.

Birthday celebrations here are not just about becoming a year older, they are a celebration of life. Yesterday, we celebrated with our October babies, Lazarus and Paco.

Surrounded by all their doggie and human friends they enjoyed a day full of fun and surprises; sharing pizza and cupcakes with everyone.

Every second of the day they are here with us is a gift!

Please join us in wishing a Happy 15th Birthday to Lazarus and a Happy 11th to little Paco.

In a perfect world, every senior dog would be living their best lives daily where their biggest concern would be choosing the comfiest place to nap or lap to snuggle in. The heartbreaking fact is that’s not the case, and many senior dogs find themselves abandoned simply because they’ve grown old.

Estimated 13-15 years of age, this precious girl was surrendered to ACCT Philadelphia with a request for euthanasia due to her age and declining health. The shelter vets did not believe this is how Claudia’s life should end and that is when we received the gut wrenching plea to help this tiny soul.

Since when does growing old mean life is over? Canine aging, like human aging, is a natural life stage. Rather than being prematurely euthanized or neglected when they slow down they deserve specialized senior care, and it is abundantly clear by her condition that she had not received care.

Claudia was covered in fleas, has limited vision, severe periodontal disease, is extremely muscle wasted to the point where you can see every vertebrae in her spine, and has osteoarthritis of the rear hips. Her Body Condition Score was a 3/9, Muscle Condition Score a 1/3. Her blood work tells us that she has some things going on that require further diagnostics and it will all be done.

Her body is frail, her soul crushed, and once again we are picking up the pieces of a broken heart while trying to heal a badly neglected body.

Little Claudia still has a big spark of life in her. She is beautiful, vibrant and so deserving of this second chance. She is imperfectly perfect and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

This is what we do here at Paws Give Me Purpose not because it’s easy, but because so many others can’t.

As always, we are starting this new week with very full, grateful hearts. Week after week we are reminded how lucky we are to be able to say “yes” to the unwanted, abused, neglected, senior, hospice and special needs dogs. The ones whose stories aren’t in the spotlight, but whose lives still matter. Those that still have so much love left to give even if their time with us is short.

Over the weekend, we welcomed tiny Cosette into Sanctuary. Yes she’s ancient, has no eyes and is missing part of an ear, but her life still matters! So when the shelter reached out for a soft place for this tiny soul to land we did not hesitate.

Just imagine yourself in her condition being left out on the streets to fend for yourself by those you thought would love you forever. Think about how you would feel, and that’s exactly how dogs feel.

Cosette and every single one of our Sanctuary residents are grateful to be here and we are thankful for our supporters who are the driving force behind us and care about these precious souls just as much as we do.

For however long Cosette may be with us, she deserves this second chance to be spoiled and loved beyond measure.

This is what we do here at Paws Give Me Purpose not because it’s easy, but because so many others can’t.

This precious girl has been suffering for a long time and we cannot not let her down. It is our hope that the treatments will shrink the mass enough so that it can be removed entirely and safely.

Geraldine, Philadelphia ACCT-A-262378, arrived through our Sanctuary door in extremely dire condition. She was literally an end of life dog sitting in a kennel who was deteriorating at an alarming rate.

When the shelter reached out to us for help, it was an immediate yes. No dog, no matter their age, appearance, or health status should die alone in a shelter.

A few days with 24/7 medical and comfort care and a great deal of TLC, we are beginning to see a spark of life from this precious girl. She’s finally eating, and even showed us her pretty fangs when we tried to offer her chicken by hand; she wanted to do it herself.

Because she came into the shelter as a stray, her history is a mystery. What we do know so far is she is immobile, emotionally shut down, has extremely bad skin and is anemic.

We are working hard here at PGMP Sanctuary to provide Geraldine with comfort, relieve any pain and give her the dignity and respect she deserves.

With the difficult medical cases that have recently walked through our doors, and continue to come in, your support is critical more than ever!

Wonton is popping in on this Thankful Thursday to say hello to all our wonderful supporters. From an uncertain future behind Philly ACCT shelter walls to a moment like this is the reason we do what we do here at PGMP. The simple joy on his face makes every moment matter even more than we thought possible.

For Wonton, the simple things in life are the greatest things. He is clearly happy, feeling fabulous and that is everything to us.

The work we do here at Paws Give Me Purpose Sanctuary can at times be difficult and emotionally daunting. Just when we feel like giving up, we see a small moment like this that brings tears to our eyes and smiles to our faces. A single moment that makes everything we go through here worth it.

Life goes by in the blink of an eye, make sure to enjoy the small moments.

We are truly at a loss for words…the code red plea we received was not one we could turn away. The alternative would have been allowing her to die in pain, scared, confused and alone behind shelter walls.

Meet precious Chi Chi, yet another senior soul left out on the streets of Philadelphia to fend for herself. She was in horrible condition, and there are no words to even describe our anger.

And please don’t tell us, “maybe they couldn’t afford vet care”. This mammary mass did not grow larger than the dog herself overnight. She should have been surrendered to a shelter when the mass was tiny giving a rescue the chance to save her life.

This is a clear case of abuse and neglect, then abandonment. This behavior is criminal, and yet no one will ever be charged for this crime.

Her body tells us a story of long-term neglect and hardship. We have no way of knowing how long she had suffered dragging around this tumor that likely weighs more than she does or how long she has endured pain with no relief. Regardless, this horrific chapter of her life is now over.

The more difficult news for us to process is that unfortunately due to the extremely large size of the mass and the tiny size of the dog, surgery is not an option. There is not enough space to acquire good margins, nor will there be any skin left to close up her tiny body.

This lead us to a ton of research, and we are going to try something called Immunocidin® which is a veterinary biologic for the treatment of mammary cancer in dogs. A USDA and CFIA-approved immunotherapeutic for the treatment of mixed mammary tumor and mammary adenocarcinoma in dogs.

This treatment has a high tumor-free survival rate, is well tolerated by dogs, including older dogs that are poor surgical risks and stimulates a dog's natural defense mechanism.

This precious girl has been suffering for a long time and desperately needs us - we cannot not let her down.

Hospice is not about giving up; it's about focusing on comfort and giving the best quality of life. Quality of life is very important to us here at Paws Give Me Purpose.

It may be too late, and it’s not at all enough, but in the end we know that we are doing the right thing.
