At the end of May, we had a committed crew cutting brushy resprouts and seeding in Swain prairie. The volunteer seeded any areas that were lacking vegetation due to prior herbicide treatment or underneath brush.

Meet us at the Friends Shelter on June 26 at 6:00 PM for the the next prairie work party. Learn more at https://www.friendsofbluemound.org/2025/06/09/prairie-restoration-work-parties/

We're proud to have Adaptive Restoration LLC as a presenting sponsor at Biodiversity from the Ground Up!

Committed to land stewardship, Adaptive Restoration supports The Prairie Enthusiasts community and landowners in the Driftless Region of Wisconsin. As a full-service ecological restoration and land management company, they implement and maintain prairie, savanna and other fire-dependent ecosystems.

At Biodiversity from the Ground Up, "Setting Up Your Prescribed Burn for Success: Lessons Learned from Site and Firebreak Preparation" will feature three experienced prescribed fire professionals from Adaptive Restoration to help guide you on how to prepare for a prescribed burn. This session takes place on February 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

We've donated a site assessment to the Mount Horeb high school band, in support of their trip to London next year. The assessment is one of the many items and services available at their silent auction site. Check it out!

The Mt. Horeb High School Marching Band previously performed at this event in 2007 and 2016. Unfortunately, COVID shut down our previously scheduled performance in 2021.

This February and March we paved over 1000 acres of prairie and savanna. Paving is an effective way to reduce w**d management issues in these ecosystems, and it reduces the chance of getting vehicles stuck in the mud.

Fire in February? Last week our crew took advantage of both the unseasonably warm weather and dry conditions to begin our spring burn season. Working mainly in grassland sites on south and west facing slopes that lost their snow cover, our crew was able to get good fire on the ground. We are looking forward to see what the effects of fire so early in the season will have on these prairies and woodlands sites this coming spring!

2023 is coming to an end, and Adaptive has been quite busy over the past year! We have been fortunate to work with wonderful clients to implement the best management practices, while keeping up to date with the latest ecological restoration and conservation science. Over the last year, we put good fire on the ground, restored and maintained prairie and oak savannas around southwest Wisconsin to promote native diversity, worked to educate the public on the importance of restoration science, and much more! We can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store for us. Adaptive wants to wish you all a happy and safe new year; may it bring you all many opportunities to explore and enjoy our natural world!

It’s mushroom mania at Adaptive! Over the past couple of weeks, the crew has been documenting, and, leaving enough for regrowth, foraging mushrooms while out in the field. Fungi can often be overlooked with their roles they play in their environment. In reality, these wonderful specimens promote soil development, are key components in breaking down organic mater, and are vital for the reestablishment of healthy ecosystems. It has been a fun challenge to see who can find and identify these unique organisms. Which are you favorites?

We had a great time with volunteers from Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy and the Bock Community Garden pulling invasive w**ds at Bock Prairie last week! This week our target species were leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula), a simple leaved perennial with greenish yellow flower bricks (picture 3) and crown vetch (Securigera varia) a herbaceous vine with pale purple and pink flowers (picture 4). Thanks to everyone who turned out to help eradicate these invasives! Missed out on the fun? We will have more opportunities to help volunteer in the upcoming months, see below for the dates!

Volunteer events at Bock Prairie and Forest (5606 Highland Way, Middleton, WI) :
Invasive species work: July 10 (Monday)
Seed collecting: August 21 (Monday) and September 12 (Tuesday)
Seed sowing: November 6 (Monday)

Lunch breaks are never better while working out here at the Nature Conservancy’s Spring Green State Natural Area! While partaking in w**d management practices, our crew loves to check out the hoary puccoon, red Columbine, and other wildflowers that are in bloom on the remnant bluff.
