July 9th at 7pm

Mount Holly is going to have an open town hall for Mount Holly residents at the Quaker Meetinghouse, July 9, 7pm. Not moderated by any current elected officials or candidates.

This meeting is being organized and sponsored by the Mount Holly Society of Friends (Quakers) for the purpose of promoting community engagement and discussion. It's intended to help citizens be better informed about the issues and organizations that contribute to our lives here in Mount Holly. I am a member of the meeting and will be one of the hosts. It is non-partisan but all citizens of Mount Holly, either politically active or not, are encouraged to attend. We only ask that participants commit to listening carefully to what others say with the intent of understanding them and considering the merits of their opinions. As this is hopefully only the first of these events we will start with an agenda with perhaps a half dozen topics to be explored. We will record the ideas and any proposed initiatives that citizens want to pursue. Please feel free to propose ideas.

In Mónica Guzmán's book "I Never Thought Of It That Way" , she draws on the research of social psychologist Shalom Schwartz, who argued that there are only ten human values:
"stimulation, hedonism, achievement, power, benevolence, universalism, security, conformity, tradition, and self-direction."
As Mónica notes, all of us prioritize these values in different ways. And here's the key: all of these values can be good in certain situations, but there are trade-offs between them. A conservative who wants to police the border isn't indifferent to the plight of illegal immigrants (universalism), but they may value security and conformity more. A liberal who wants to open the border isn't blind to concerns about security, but may value universalism more.

Or, to put it another way: we commit a grave error when we look at people across the aisle and "mistake a different ordering of values for an absence of the ones that [we]...think matter most."

Just food for thought. I'm trying to be positive lol

Thanks to all who came out this afternoon to help use good communication to help "Bridge the Divide".
Two dozen folks were led by the group Braver Angels in a well organized and well needed Workshop to help with conversing with others of different ideas/ parties/ etc than oneself.
Pics coming and look for a doc by PBS...
