Who she is:
Nannie Helen Burroughs was an educator, activist, and institution builder who dedicated her life to expanding education and economic opportunity for Black women in the early 20th century.

What she did:
In 1909, she founded the National Training School for Women and Girls, creating one of the first formal institutions focused on education, workforce readiness, leadership, and dignity for Black women, at a time when they were excluded from both education systems and philanthropic support.

How her work affects us today:
Her model laid the foundation for modern workforce development, skills-based education, and community-centered nonprofits. She proved that education must be tied to real opportunity in order to create lasting independence and generational impact.

How we continue her vision, no matter where we are:
We honor her legacy today by investing in education that leads to economic stability, mentoring future leaders, supporting skills-based programs, and ensuring access, not charity, is at the center of community empowerment.
