The black and white postcard labeled "Astico, Mt. Desert Island, Maine," is addressed to Allan F. Sawyer, of Millbridge, Maine. The side of the photograph is marked: "I suppose you recognize this as the place where E.R.N. used to work. Myself aussi. M." postmarked 1905.

This striking photo (from the collection of the Mount Desert Island Historical Society) captures “Eyrie,” the grand 100-room summer retreat of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., nestled in Seal Harbor and framed by the first hints of autumn color. Originally purchased in 1910, Rockefeller transformed the modest cottage into a sweeping estate with the help of architect Duncan Candler in 1914. The surrounding gardens—elegant and thoughtfully designed—bear the touch of renowned landscape architect Beatrix Farrand.

The Harbor House in Manset, Southwest Harbor, Maine. In In 1925, it became the home of Mr. BB Hinckley, who used it as a summer home. BB Hinckley Jr. opened it as "The Moorings" hotel in the 1930s. The Moorings Inn overlooks the mountain range and the harbor of Mount Desert.
