Nervous about coming to the Harbor? Below is an overview of the intake process.
Reaching out to The Harbor for help can feel overwhelming, but the intake process is designed to help youth feel safe, supported, and understood. Every shelter may do things a little differently, but here are some things youth can expect during intake at the Harbor:
✨A Welcoming and Safe Environment✨
Staff will greet youth, explain the process, and help them feel as comfortable as possible. The goal is to create a safe and respectful space from the very beginning.
✨Basic Information and Paperwork✨
Youth may be asked questions about:
Name and age
Emergency contacts
Current living situation
School or employment information
Medical needs or medications
This information helps staff understand how to best support each individual.
✨Discussion About Needs and Goals✨
Staff may talk with youth about:
Immediate safety concerns
Food, clothing, or hygiene needs
Mental health or counseling support
Education, employment, or housing goals
Family relationships or support systems
The purpose is to connect youth with the right resources and services.
✨Review of Shelter Rules and Expectations✨
Shelter staff will explain:
Daily schedules
Safety guidelines
House expectations
Available programs and services
This helps everyone understand how The Harbor operates and keeps the environment safe for all residents.
✨Tour of the Shelter✨
Youth are often shown around the facility, including:
Sleeping areas
Common spaces
Bathrooms and laundry areas
Meal or recreation spaces
Fire escapes
Meeting staff and seeing the space can help reduce anxiety and make the shelter feel more welcoming.
✨Support Every Step of the Way✨
Most importantly, intake is about helping youth feel supported, heard, and connected to caring adults and helpful resources. Staff are there to answer questions and help youth take the next steps toward stability and safety.
No young person should have to face difficult situations alone. 💙
