As you know the 12 Annual North Channel Sturgeon Classic is fast approaching. Saturday October 10, 2026, is the day!! This year we will have close to 30 teams chasing that winning fish on the St. Clair River. As in previous years, the Tournament is based out of the Clay Township Municipal Park (4768 Pointe Tremble Rd, Algonac, MI 48001), specifically the outdoor pavilion.
This year we are adding a full day of Sturgeon outreach at the pavilion. We will have our Outreach team there with LIVE Sturgeon for the Sturgeon in the Classroom program, other outreach informational materials and some merchandise for sale as well.
We are looking for some volunteers to help facilitate the days’ activities, broken down into three categories:
6-10AM - Set up, Captains Meeting & outreach (Captain’s meeting Starts at 7:00AM)
10-4PM - Outreach assistance, merchandise sales, general support
4-9PM - Awards Dinner, take down, and clean up (Awards Dinner starts at 6:00PM)
Anyone who can help is more than welcome to hang out all day, we’ll have food/beverages for any volunteers, or you can help during one or all the above time slots whatever you can do, we will appreciate the support.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 28, 2026
Rep. Cavitt introduces plan to protect lake sturgeon, increase penalties for poaching
State Rep. Cam Cavitt this week introduced legislation to protect Michigan’s lake sturgeon.
“Michigan’s lake sturgeon are a living piece of our state’s natural history, and we have a responsibility to protect them,” said Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). “When someone illegally takes one of these fish, the consequences must reflect the seriousness of that violation. Increasing the maximum penalty gives law enforcement and the courts a stronger tool to deter poaching and protect this magnificent species for future generations.”
House Bill 6409 would increase penalties for illegally taking or possessing lake sturgeon in the state of Michigan.
“This legislation is sadly needed,” Cavitt said. “In July, the Michigan DNR launched an investigation after a six-foot sturgeon was found dumped on a road in Muskegon County. Unfortunately, the poacher was never brought to justice. By increasing the penalty, we’re sending a clear message that we are going to hold perpetrators accountable.”
Lake sturgeon are native to Michigan and belong to an ancient family of fish that dates back approximately 136 million years. They have long lifespans and are slow to reproduce, with some individuals living for more than a century, and females often requiring decades to reach sexual maturity. Michigan has listed lake sturgeon as a threatened species since 1994, and state, tribal and federal partners continue restoration and rehabilitation efforts.
“Poaching should never be viewed as a victimless violation,” Cavitt said. “Every mature sturgeon represents years, even decades, of growth and a potential contribution to the next generation of fish. We need our penalties to recognize the value of these animals and provide a firm deterrent against harming them.”
HB 6409 was referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources and Tourism for further consideration.
