The squadron was honored to have Wing Commander Col Reed pay a visit to our March 5 meeting. She came to present the Ehrhart Award to C/Capts Lavelle and Grimes. There were also two promotions, 2nd Lt. Kim promoted to 1st Lt and C/SSgt Rivera promoted to C/TSgt. C/CMSgt Kim received the Aerospace Cadet of the Year award. And finally, 1st Lt Lavelle, Capt Winters, 1st Lt Kim and 1st Lt Foiles were presented the Commander’s Commendation award.

The Squadron welcomed a new commander last night. Outgoing commander Maj Rolfe has moved on to take the position of Director of Cadet Programs for Maryland Wing. He is succeeded by Capt Pekar. The squadron is grateful for the leadership provided Maj Rolfe over the last 3+ years and looks forward to continued growth under the guidance of Capt Pekar.

Members of Maryland Wing, National Capital Wing and Virginia Wing commemorated the 83rd anniversary of the founding of the Civil Air Patrol by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. The cadets presenting the wreath were:

On December 1, 2024, Mt Airy Composite Squadron cadets C/1st Lt Dario Lavelle and C/2d Lt Alexander Rolfe laid wreaths at the Civil Air Patrol Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery in honor of Colorado Wing members Susan Wolber and Jay Rhoten . The Mt Airy squadron was joined by fellow CAP members from Maryland Wing, National Capital Wing and Virginia Wing . Maj Wolber and Maj Rhoten were members of the Thompson Valley Composite squadron and perished during a training mission on November 23, 2024.

Maryland Wing announced their 2024 awards at the recent Wing Conference in November. We are honored that several Mt Airy Composited Squadron members were recipients of these awards.

Frank G. Brewer CAP Memorial Aerospace Award – Cadet: C/2d Lt Alexander Rolfe

Cadet Programs Officer of the Year: Maj Nathan Rolfe

In addition, the Frank G. Brewer CAP Memorial Aerospace Award - Non-CAP Individual was awarded to Lloyd Spanberger, a frequent presenter at our squadron meetings and a valuable resource to CAP in general.

Maryland Wing Squadron of the Year 2024

Our Story

Mount Airy Composite Squadron is a composite of both senior and youth programs whose members are drawn from Carroll, Frederick, Howard and Montgomery counties. The Squadron meets Wednesday nights, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Izaak Walton League of America, Mt Airy Chapter, IWLA 6642, Mt Airy, Maryland. Have a passion for aviation, dream of flight, are considering a career in the military? Want to serve your community and enhance your leadership skills? Join us. Youths, ages 12 to 18, parents and adults interested in the cadet or senior program are always welcome to drop in.
