CALL TO ACTION FROM MAYOR HUSHOUR: emails needed!
Dear Fans of Rails to Trails,
We are submitting for a federal grant to cross SH27 with an underground (pedestrian tunnel) passage. What is needed in the application is at least 10 letters (emails are good) letters of support. More is better, but 10 is target.

Content: “I support Mount Airy’s effort to safely cross State Highway 27 through a safe underground, pedestrian tunnel linking communities, businesses and amenities on the east and west side of the highway. This trail promotes healthy lifestyles and provides a much needed alternative to relying on automotive transportation to visit, utilize or frequent the many opportunities available in our town.

The Town and Rails to Trails would like to give a huge shout-out to the Hiya! Karate competition team and their families for cleaning Rails to Trails East this Saturday!

They spent two hours trudging through mud and climbing steep slopes to pick up trash. We are extremely grateful for their enthusiasm and hard work! The trail looks much better thanks to their efforts and it was wonderful timing right before another snowfall.

We wish them much success in their upcoming competitions!

For all volunteering opportunities, we recommend wearing layers, long sleeves and pants, closed-toe shoes, bringing a bottle of water, and please bring gloves if you have your own! Service learning hour documentation is available at all CRTT volunteer opportunities.

We’ve come a long way in improving the “Old Main Line” trail! The wooden Watkins Park Bridge has been replaced and soon asphalt will complete the trail over the B&O 1838 Main Line through Mount Airy! The railroad continued operation into the mid 1970’s. And some track still exists along the trail!
