“In the beginning, we had humble intentions. We just wanted to survive.

We had no history in the restaurant business, but the whole family worked hard to make it happen.

And somewhere along the way, it became bigger than that.

A few years ago, we had the first Latino Night on Market Street, followed by a Juneteenth festival the next day. We had three or four hundred people dancing in the street. I’m watching guys in Carhartt pants and boots dancing salsa, and the next night everybody’s out there jamming to Motown.

People from different backgrounds, all intermingling and having fun.

I remember thinking, ‘my gosh, we created something bigger than we ever envisioned.’

That’s what makes me proud — when people are happy, they’re talking, they’re enjoying the camaraderie and fellowship of community. Whatever your religious, racial, or ethnic background, everybody can come together here.
