Surry Arts Council TAPS

Surry Arts Council TAPS FREE guitar, banjo and fiddle lessons! FREE fiddle, guitar, and banjo lessons take place EVERY Thursday at the Historic Earle Theatre.

The Surry Arts Council Traditional Arts Programs for Students (TAPS) is a North Carolina Arts Council funded program that seeks to preserve North Carolina's musical heritage and traditions. Fiddle lessons at 5:30 p.m. and Guitar/Banjo lessons at 6:15 p.m. Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay during lessons. TAPS unites elementary and middle school students with local traditional musicians

for instruction. The Surry Arts Council program at the EARLE is taught by award winning local musician, Jim Vipperman. Jim has won 1st place in Bluegrass Fiddle at the Galax Fiddlers Convention, and he has won the Mount Airy Fiddlers Convention Bluegrass Fiddle division 9 times. He no longer enters and is in charge of judging. He won the coveted Brown-Hudson Award for his many years of teaching hundreds of students and his efforts to keep our musical heritage alive.
