On Thursday, June 4th, Habersham County Farm Bureau took students from South Habersham MS FFA on Farm Tours across Northeast Georgia.
Our first stop, Texga farms in Clarkesville Ga! Students learned about the beef industry from a direct to consumer beef producers by looking at market value, how many pounds of beef come from a beef cow, the daily operations, and hear from Texga owner Caroline Lewallen on the history behind Texga Farms.
Our send stop took us to the Blue Ridge Honey Co in Rabun County where students learned about the honeybee business including witnessing the extraction process of honey making, the market value of honey measured by price per barrel, and some delicious taste testing honey flavors from across the U.S.
Our third stop took us to Glo-Crest Farms in Cleveland, GA, also known as Mtn. Fresh Creamery, where students took a tour of their dairy facility learning about the different dairy breeds, the daily operations of a milking barn, and even got to witness a beautiful dairy calf being born!
Our fourth and final stop took us to the GPLN (Ga Poultry Laboratory Network) lab in Gainesville, Ga where students got a birds-eye view of the industry as whole, the number of poultry farms we have in Ga, the importance of biosecurity, and had the chance to observe a necropsy procedure that focuses on the diagnostics side of poultry.
Thank you to all of these farms a facilities that hosted us for the day, this is an invaluable lesson for students to see first hand the commodities in Georgia that support our state's #1 industry!
