Central Coast Wetlands Group at Moss Landing Marine Labs

Central Coast Wetlands Group at Moss Landing Marine Labs CCWG is a wetlands science research group serving the Central Coast of California.

We work closely with regional and state partners to improve wetland science communication between researchers, resource managers and policy makers. We do this through the development and dissemination of tools and materials, and through organizing and hosting meetings and symposia that bring groups of people together to increase dialogue. We think that by collaborating on wetland-related efforts,

local resources can be used more effectively to assess and improve the condition of local wetlands and the services they provide.

🌿That’s a wrap on this season’s dune restoration!

This winter, CCWG worked across three Monterey County State Beaches, restoring dunes through native planting, monitoring, erosion control, and habitat protection. Together with our partners and volunteers, we planted over 3,000 native dune plants and installed sand fencing, hay bales, and driftwood structures to help stabilize dunes and support natural sand movement.

A heartfelt thank you to our partners and 100+ volunteers whose dedication made this season’s restoration possible. We’re excited to continue building healthier, more resilient dunes in the future!

We’re excited to highlight our outstanding dune restoration and monitoring intern, Leslie Munoz. Leslie is a graduate student at CSUMB completing her professional internship with the Central Coast Wetlands Group.

In the first two months of her internship, Leslie has supported pre-restoration vegetation monitoring, assisted with installing sand fencing and hay bales to capture sand, and contributed to our community planting events. She plays a key role in both the science and stewardship sides of our dune restoration work.

Her internship is supported by the workforce development component of the NOAA-funded Climate Resilient Monterey Bay grant.

Thank you, Leslie, for your dedication and hard work! We are excited to see what Leslie accomplishes over her next two years in CSUMB’s PSM program.

Our endangered Monterey Gilia planting event yesterday was a huge success🌸 Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, we installed approximately 1,400 plants.

This restoration effort will help contribute to the recovery of this endemic coastal species. Each plant we installed brings this rare bloom closer to recovery.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in making this meaningful work possible. Together, we’re making a lasting impact🌿
