Interesting article. More ideas are welcome. Post in the comments.

To stay warm outside in cold weather, layer loose-fitting wool or synthetic clothing (avoiding cotton), keep extremities covered with hats, mittens, and warm socks, stay dry, keep moving to generate heat, and stay hydrated with warm drinks and snacks, using waterproof outer layers to block wind and moisture.

Layering is Key

• Base Layer (Wicking): Thermal underwear (merino wool or synthetics like polyester) to pull sweat away from your skin; cotton is a no-go as it traps moisture.
• Mid-Layer (Insulation): Fleece, wool sweater, or down jacket to trap body heat.
• Outer Layer (Protection): A waterproof, windproof shell jacket and snow pants to block wind and moisture.

This video demonstrates how to layer your clothing for warmth:
Cover Extremities

• Head: A warm, windproof hat (fleece-lined or wool) is crucial; consider a thin one under a thick one.
• Hands: Mittens are warmer than gloves; try layering thin liners with waterproof mittens.
• Feet: Wear two pairs of socks (thin liner under thick wool) with waterproof boots; avoid cotton socks.
• Face/Neck: Use a scarf or neck gaiter to cover your mouth and nose to warm the air you breathe. [1, 3, 4, 5, 7]

Watch this video to learn how to properly cover your face and head in the cold:
Stay Dry & Hydrated

• Stay Dry: Wetness leads to cold; ensure outer layers are waterproof and avoid sweating excessively by adjusting layers.
• Hydrate & Eat: Drink plenty of hot liquids (tea, broth) and eat high-energy snacks, as dehydration happens quickly in the cold.

Movement & Breaks

• Keep Moving: Gentle activity like walking, jumping jacks, or even swinging arms generates heat.
• Take Breaks: Periodically go indoors to warm up, especially if you're getting too cold or wet.

This video shows you how to stay warm even when you are stationary:
Other Tips

• Start Warm: Begin your day warm and dry.
• Insulate from Ground: Use a mat or backpack to sit on to prevent heat loss to the cold ground.
• Hand Warmers: Use chemical hand warmers inside gloves or pockets.

During the month of NOVEMBER we have committed to making 2,520 Care Snack bags to FEED LOCAL KIDS. 160 are distributed to 8 local Moses Lake Schools and then twice a week we deliver 235 to Midway Elementary to give to preschool kids. The kids are happy for the snack. If you can help us we really need the support to keep this going. Either by donating snack items: Sweet (granola bar, krispie treat or cookies), Salty (chips, popcorn or crackers), and a Cup (pudding, jello, fruit or applesauce. We'll put it all into a decorated white sack with a plastic spoon. This program continues all school year and in the summer we give these snack bags to the Boys & Girls Club. All donations stay local and go to feed local kids. If you'd like to make a financial donation or purchase from our Amazon Wish List go to: www.CareMosesLake.com/be-a-giver

💙 Help Restore a Smile — and Hope 💙

At North Central Washington Peer Connection, we believe everyone deserves to smile without shame.

One of our community members has faced more than her share of hardship. After surviving years of trauma and loss — including the devastating passing of her son — she’s now working hard to rebuild her health, her confidence, and her life.

Because of a genetic condition, she lost all of her teeth. And every time she seeks help from a dentist, she faces judgment and stigma instead of compassion. The looks, the sighs, the assumptions — they all make it harder for her to keep going.

But she’s doing it anyway. 💪

We’ve partnered with a local dentist who has already started the process of restoring her smile. The total out-of-pocket cost that remains is $1,600 — and we’re asking our community to come together to help make this possible.

Every dollar brings her one step closer to smiling again with confidence, to eating without pain, and to seeing herself the way we see her — strong, resilient, and deserving of dignity.

🦋 How You Can Help:
✨ Donate directly to North Central Washington Peer Connection (note “Smile Fund”)
✨ Drop off donations at 727 Broadway Ave, Moses Lake
✨ Email [email protected] or [email protected] for details
✨ Share this post to spread the word

Together, we can remind her — and others — that healing is possible, hope is real, and she’s not alone. 💜
