The Courtyard at Big Bend Community College has been in need of a redesign for a long time. Currently the Courtyard has a few metal picnic tables, a few benches, and a few shrubbery plants. This type of seating arrangement in the summer might be too hot to sit on and in the winter might be too cold to sit on. Even if students or staff members decided to use this area, they would do so for a short period as the seating is hard and there isn’t anything in place to block the sun. People in wheelchairs can’t just come up to this space and use it as a study area because the design of the current benches is too low for them to use as a table to ride up next to and put their study materials down on it. The picnic tables as well don’t have an area that is easily accessible to them to ride up next to and use as a comfortable arrangement. There isn't anything that is attracting people to this space because it is neither inviting, practical or elaborate. As students and staff approach this Courtyard they simply just keep walking past it, as the current design is simply communicating that this area is not a place to be used for gathering or studying.

Building off of our previous redesign of the 1800 building courtyard

Chosen because current design is basic, impractical, and uninviting

We want to create a space that brings the community together

Practical design and inviting atmosphere that students and faculty alike will utilize

Serve to draw people together and provide a space to establish connections
