Clearwater Snake Trout Unlimited Chapter 935

The Chapter is composed of Trout Unlimited members from parts of eastern Washington and north central Idaho.

We will work to conserve, protect and restore salmonids in the Clearwater and lower Salmon river region, and in the lower Snake River. A new chapter of Trout Unlimited is forming in the greater Lewiston-Clarkston-Moscow-Pullman Region. The chapter will consist of Trout Unlimited members from Washington and Idaho. It will bring TU's mission to conserve, protect and restore North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds to the Lower Snake River Region. By the next generation, Trout Unlimited will ensure that robust populations of native and wild coldwater fish once again thrive within their North American range, so that our children can enjoy healthy fisheries in their home waters. Our new chapter could help to substantially enhance conditions for trout and salmon in the lower Snake, Salmon, Clearwater, Grande Ronde, Tucannon, Palouse, Lochsa and Selway rivers. Our new chapter could help shape the work of federal and Washington and Idaho state agencies toward this region realizing Trout Unlimited's vision of ensuring robust populations of native and wild coldwater fish thriving again in their North American range for our children.

Chapter Highway 12 Trash Pickup CANCELLED

Due to lack of expressed interest or conflicting activities (the image above does not reflect the excellent weather forecast), the Clearwater/Snake River Chapter highway trash pickup scheduled for Saturday, October 3 is cancelled. Maybe we'll get to it in the spring?

I would be interested in hearing what sort of activities the TU members assigned to this Chapter would be more interested in than the ones that have recently been offered and organized.

Please drop me a note ([email protected], or add in comments below) as to what sort of local activities would be of interest to you. Of course, your membership in the national T.U. organization is significant and important and appreciated, so if no Chapter/local activities are of interest to you, that's fine, and I'd like to know that, too.

Chapter Trash Pickup on U.S. 12 on Saturday, October 3

The Chapter's section of Highway 12 is near Powell, and, if enough folks show up, we will have a lunch meeting at the Lochsa Lodge. The weather forecast is looking good, and we will start at 1000. While regulations can be revised or reversed by future administrations, the damage these changes could allow in the next few years may be irreversible.

TU Trash Pick-up Day is Saturday, October 3

The date of the TU Chapter 935's Highway 12 Trash Cleanup along the Lochsa River has finally been finalized as Saturday, October 3. The Chapter's reach of the highway starts at Mile Marker 158. The TU Clearwater/Snake Rivers Chapter has been doing this clean-up most years for better than a decade. We should be finished by lunchtime, and are currently planning to have an in-person meeting at the nearby Lochsa Lodge following the effort.

I know that it's a long way up there, but we will work up a car pool situation, and so don't let a perceived lack of transportation deter you. If you are interested in attending the clean-up or have any questions about Chapter activities please contact me via e-mail at [email protected]

TU Field Project Report-East Fork Potlatch River

A few hardy souls assisted Anne Connor (of the Clearwater County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD)) on August 29, 2006 in the construction of Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) on the East Fork Potlatch River and its tributary Bobs Creek.

Attached are some photos of Ms. Connor and one of the volunteers in the construction process. There is also a before and after comparison of a BDA built at the SWCD site on the East Fork during the previous TU Field Day in 2024 with the structure's current condition.

One of the volunteers also demonstrated the presence of steelhead, brook trout, and redside shiners in the project area of Bob's Creek.

We missed the rest of the Clearwater/Snake River Chapter out there and hope that this report will entice some of you to pitch in at the 2027 field day at the site.

Fish Tossing Reminder

If your pitching arm is up to it, send me a note. Fish Tossing volunteers are currently being sought to assist the Nez Perce Tribe in their efforts to fertilize Clearwater River Basin streams with carcasses of hatchery salmon.

I am told by Aaron Penvose, TU Idaho Restoration lead, that next Wednesday, September 9, is a particularly good day to volunteer, in that they expect to have more than 1,000 carcasses to distribute that day. Please see the post pinned to the top of this site for more information. Also, please do send me an e-mail if you are interersted in volunteering, so that I can set you up with Aaron. Field work this Saturday! TU membership not necessary. Transportation available!

The Chapter is organizing a field day project opportunity being conducted by the the Clearwater Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) on August 29, 2026. I am driving up from Clarkston and can give a lift to up to three volunteers from the Lewiston/Clarkston/Moscow/Pullman area.

The project will be implemented on the East Fork of the Potlatch River and its tributary Bobs Creek, about 4 miles east of Bovill, Idaho, and is intended to improve steelhead habitat in these streams.

Volunteers would be trained and organized to collect willow, alder, and conifer stems and to weave them onto posts driven into the streambed in the form of Beaver Dam Analogues (BDAs) at restoration project sites in the East Fork and Bobs Creek. BDAs simulate the natural work of beavers, and improve and restore instream and riparian habitat.

Volunteers would sign up to work all or part of the period from 9:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. that Saturday, and to meet near the project site at a large turnout along the East Fork Road near the Latah/Clearwater County line. You needn't be there all day. Participants should bring their own food, water, and work gloves, and should plan to get wet to a greater or lesser extent (you should probably bring waders or hip boots--the water is cold, but wet wading may be your thing).

If you are interested in building some BDAs, please get in touch with me ([email protected]) so that I have an idea of how many folks are coming and to answer further questions. Again, you don't have to be a current TU member to participate, and I can give a lift to a few folks.
