On yesterday's field trip to McCroskey Park, we saw death camas (Toxicoscordion venenosum). Pam told us that one bee coevolved with and is able to pollinate it because the plant toxins kill other pollinating bees. That bee is the death camas miner bee (Andrena astragali). As we were looking at the death camas, a bee came to pollinate. It may be that one bee species! Apparently the death camas miner bee concentrates the camas neurotoxins and is poisonous if it is eaten as well. None of us can ID the bee, but we're wishing it well! Photo by Susan Rounds!

On May 30, White Pine had field trip to Tom Besser's prairie restoration project. This was followed by a field trip to look at plants blooming along the creek up onto the mountain, led by Lisa Morris and Juanita Lichthardt. These photos are from the prairie restoration. (Other photos may follow from the hike on Moscow Mountain.) Tom started his restoration project in the fall after harvest of the grain field. It was seeded with native plants at that time with a regular drill. He has been expanding the species every year with new additions. It is lovely! Our next field trip is scheduled for June 6 to Mary McCroskey State Park.

The White Pine Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society has many goals. If it seems that we are pushing in many directions right now, we are! Guess why!? It's spring! The best time to see and learn about native plants since many are blooming now and the best time to help with their conservation because weeds are expanding now, so we are doing lots of both. Here are a few photos of one of several recent weed-pulls that have been initiated to help people with large areas of native habitats. They may not sound fun, but they actually are!

Mary Minerva McCroskey State Park Field Trip
Pam Brunsfeld & Judy Ferguson
9:30 am – 4 pm PDT, Saturday June 6, 2026

Join us for a day trip to Mary McCroskey State Park to view an abundance of wildflowers and witness two special things listed below. Meet at 9:30 at the Rosauer’s parking lot (look for a green Subaru Forester with kayak racks) to arrange carpooling. In the park we will travel on a 17-mile gravel road (fine for passenger cars) and return via US 95 south of Tensed. Bring lunch, water, hat, etc. This will mainly be roadside botanizing but if walking sticks make you more comfortable for short distances, bring them. We will return mid-late afternoon. A species list will be provided. Heavy rain cancels.
First, taper-leaf Penstemon, Penstemon attenuatus, is normally blue to violet purple. At the park a population extends miles, that ranges from white to pale pink to rose, to light blue or lavender, to deep purple and blue. This is only reported to occur in one other locality in eastern Oregon. Second, INPS board members have been working with park officials developing a voucher garden that can provide native seeds for restoring disturbed areas of the Park, including areas around and near Sublime Point, a magnificent part of the park that overlooks the Palouse.
