A local arborist discusses possible solutions for dealing with a dying oak. Because of the progression of rot, the only choice is to remove it.
This is the “Panther Oak” , the largest tree in Shadowlawn Park and estimated at 200 years old. This cherry bark oak was measured to be 90 feet tall and over 20 feet in circumference. If it was in good health, this oak would likely qualify for the Tennessee Champion Tree Program. Because of the loss of limbs, the crown was smaller than it should be. This caused it to lose points in the judging.
The man speaking in this video is a professional arborist with decades of experience. The decision to remove this tree was not made lightly. It has been and a landmark for decades and will be missed by the community. The tree is in a high traffic area, and it has been pruned multiple times to remove large limbs that could be a danger to the public.
