Small Child Found Safe During Overnight Search Operation After Local Law Enforcement Drone Pilot Locates Him Nearly One Mile From His Home.
COLFAX, WA- Approximately 930pm on Friday evening, deputies from the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office were notified that a 3yoa child with Autism had gone missing from his family home just west of Colton, WA.
Shortly after arriving on scene, deputies determined the child had been missing for nearly an hour and immediately began a search of the area where the child was last seen. Deputies also called in assistance from other Emergency Responders to include personnel from Fire District 14, Latah Search and Rescue, the Pullman Police Department, the Moscow Police Department, WSP, Latah County Sheriff’s Office and Whitman County Emergency Mgt. A volunteer K9 search unit also responded to assist. In total over 75 First Responders from the immediate area arrived to assist with the search.
With concerns of nighttime search operations, the age of the child, coupled with specific concerns associated with his Autism, the call for assistance went out and as many as were able responded. In addition to placing Rotor Air Support on standby, small unmanned aircraft were deployed in the immediate area by officers from the Sheriff’s Office, Pullman PD and Moscow PD. Each of the unmanned units (Drones) were equipped with FlIR (Forward Looking Infrared) which can detect heat signals and have become a vital tool in Search and Rescue Operations.
Ultimately, an Officer from the Moscow Police Department, operating one of the Drones was able to detect a heat signal in a nearby field which turned out to be the missing child. The location was determined to be approximately one mile from the family home.
Nearly 3 hours after the Child was reported missing, he was located, checked out by EMT’s and returned to his home unharmed and without injury.
The Whitman County Sheriff’s Office is grateful for all those who responded to help find this missing child and return him safely to his family.
