Bianca Noel Piper

Missing Since: March 10, 2005 from Foley, Missouri
Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: December 26, 1991
Age: 13 years old
Height and Weight: 5'6, 185 pounds

Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian female. Brown hair, brown eyes. Piper's nickname is B and some agencies refer to her as Bianca Tanner. She has scars on her arms and legs and a scar on her abdomen. Her ears are pierced. Piper may wear her hair in a ponytail.

Clothing/Jewelry Description: A lime green blouse, a gray Adidas hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and white sneakers.

Medical Conditions: Piper suffers from attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and severe bipolar disorder, for which she was hospitalized in early childhood. She has mood swings, aggressive tendencies, periodic anxiety attacks, and difficulties with self-control as a result of her conditions; however, she often acts like a normal teenager and it may be difficult to tell that she is ill. She takes several daily medications and if she does not take them, she may become disoriented and have hallucinations. Piper may be in need of medical attention.

Piper was last seen at approximately 6:15 p.m. on March 10, 2005, when her mother dropped her off at McIntosh Hill Road in Foley, Missouri, about a mile from their home. Piper had been having anger management problems and had a tantrum about chores before her disappearance. Her therapist had advised Piper's mother to drive her a distance from home and make her walk back alone to deal with her aggression. Piper and her mother had tried the treatment only once prior to March 10, but it had been helpful, and Piper requested that it be done again. She also asked to be dropped off further from home than she had before. She never arrived home and has never been heard from again. Her mother reported her missing at 8:20 p.m. Piper was carrying a flashlight at the time of her disappearance.

Investigators at first believed Piper became lost on her way back home. If this theory is correct she would have succumbed to exposure in a short time; temperatures in the area the evening of her disappearance dropped below freezing. However, since an extensive search turned up no sign of Piper, authorities now think she may have been abducted. She has no history of running away from home. Her mother and her mother's live-in boyfriend have both passed polygraph tests, her biological father was extensively interviewed, and none of her family members are considered suspects in the case.

In 2007, investigators began investigating Michael J. Devlin for possible involvement in Piper's disappearance and in several other cases, including the 1991 disappearance of Charles "Arlin" Henderson, and the 1988 disappearance of Scott Kleeschulte. Shawn Hornbeck, a fifteen-year-old boy who disappeared in 2002, and William "Ben" Ownby, a thirteen-year-old boy who was abducted in 2007, were both found alive and well in Devlin's house in January 2007. Ownby had been missing for five days and Hornbeck for over four years. Both boys had been held against their will by Devlin, who subequently pleaded guilty to kidnapping and child molestation and was sentenced to life in prison. Authorities initially suspected Devlin could be linked to other missing child cases, and formed a multi-jurisdictional task force to investigate this theory. In October 2007 the task force dissolved, as it couldn't find any evidence that Devlin was involved with children other than Hornbeck and Ownby.

Piper was an eighth-grader at Winfield Middle School at the time of her disappearance and was in special education classes because she has a short attention span and had missed a lot of school due to her illnesses. Her teachers stated she is artistically talented. Piper's father died in 2009, but her mother and sister are still alive and looking for her. Her mother now lives in St. Charles, Missouri. Piper's case remains unsolved.

Brianna Alexandria Maitland

Missing Since: March 19, 2004 from Montgomery, Vermont
Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: October 8, 1986
Age: 17 years old
Height and Weight: 5'3 - 5'5, 105 - 118 pounds

Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian female. Brown hair, hazel eyes. Maitland has a faint scar extending from her left eyebrow to her forehead. Her left nostril is pierced; she wore a small ring or stud in it at the time of her disappearance. She wears contact lenses, but they were left behind when she vanished. Maitland's nicknames are Bri and B.

Medical Conditions: Maitland was taking medication for migraine headaches at the time of her disappearance. Her medication was left behind.

Maitland was last seen at her dishwashing job at the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery, Vermont, between 11:20 p.m. and midnight on March 19, 2004. Her coworkers asked her to have dinner with them, but she declined because she was tired and had to get up early to go her second job as a waitress in St. Albans, Vermont. She left work and was supposed to go home to where she lived with a friend in Sheldon, Vermont. She never arrived and her friend assumed she had moved back in with her parents and brother in East Franklin, Vermont. The friend called Maitland's parents on March 23 and found out Maitland wasn't there, and reported her missing.

Maitland's vehicle, a pale green four-door 1985 Oldsmobile sedan, was found abandoned on March 20, off East Berkshire Road and Route 118, across Dutchburn Farm Road, about a mile outside of Montgomery. It was parked partially inside an abandoned barn. Two of Maitland's uncashed paychecks were on the front seat of the car. She also left behind all her clothing, her medicine, driver's license, her makeup, and her contact lenses. Some of her belongings were strewn on the ground in front of the car. A woman's fleece jacket was found in a field near Maitland's car, but it apparently did not belong to her.

The Oldsmobile had sustained minor damage; it had apparently backed into the building and punctured a hole in the wall. Investigators later came to believe the accident may have been staged. Police did not initially report the abandoned car to Maitland's mother, who is the registered owner. They noticed Maitland's paychecks inside the vehicle and guessed that she was the primary driver, so they went to her place of work to try to find her and tell her about the car. The abandoned Oldsmobile and Maitland's disappearance were not connected until her disappearance was reported three days later. A photograph of the vehicle as it was found is posted below this case summary.

The residence where Maitland's car was found is former home of Myron and Harry Dutchburn, who were brutally beaten and robbed there in 1986. The crime is unsolved. The Dutchburn brothers survived the attack and moved into a nursing home after being released from the hospital; they never returned to the residence. They both later died of natural causes. The home had been vacant for six years prior to Maitland's disappearance.

There has been some speculation that Maitland's disappearance is related to the disappearance of Maura Murray, a nursing student from Massachusetts who vanished February 9, 2004 in Haverhill, New Hampshire after getting into a car accident. She has not been found. Haverhill is only about 90 miles from Montgomery. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) met with local authorities to discuss possible links between the cases. Both Murray and Maitland are attractive brown-haired young women, and both disappeared after car accidents in which their cars were left behind with personal items inside. However, the FBI and local law enforcement concluded that, despite the apparent similarities, Murray and Maitland's cases were probably not connected to each other. The theory is not being entirely ruled out, but investigators believe it is an unlikely one.

About three weeks before Maitland disappeared, she was reportedly attacked by a female acquaintance in front of several witnesses. The reasons for the assault are unclear. Maitland did not try to defend herself, although she has had several years of martial arts training. After the attack she went to the hospital and received treatment for facial cuts, two black eyes and a concussion. She filed a criminal complaint against her alleged attacker. The case was still pending when Maitland disappeared. After she vanished, the district attorney dropped the complaint, against the objections of Maitland's parents.

There is a possibility that Maitland left of her own accord; she mentioned to friends her plans for possibly making a short trip out of the area. She is described as an independent, restless young woman who was unhappy in her rural surroundings, and she has run away before. Maitland passed her General Equivalency Diploma (GED) examination on the day of her disappearance; the GED is the equivalent of a high school diploma. She planned to attend college part-time. Authorities believe she was a victim of foul play and her disappearance is possibly drug-related; drugs are very common in the Montgomery area. Maitland's parents also think she came to harm, but they maintain their daughter was not seriously involved with drugs and drugs were not a factor in her disappearance.

Some agencies report that Maitland vanished from East Franklin or Sheldon, Vermont.

34 years ago today.... SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE knows SOMETHING.

Charles Arlin Leon Henderson

Missing Since: July 25, 1991 from Moscow Mills, Missouri
Classification: Non-Family Abduction
Date Of Birth: March 16, 1980
Age: 11 years old
Height and Weight: 4'5, 70 pounds

Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian male, blonde hair. blue eyes. last seen with a crew cut. has a gap between his teeth. has a scar on his thigh.

Clothing Description: a camouflage print t-shirt. camouflage print pants. gray socks. black tennis shoes.

Traits and Habits: Arlin loves swimming and jumping off diving boards. He loves riding his bicycle. His favorite subjects were science and social studies. He was very mature for his age and goes by the name Arlin.

Henderson was riding his white and yellow bicycle in his family's Moscow Mills, Missouri mobile home, about fifty miles north of St. Louis, on July 25, 1991. He was last seen between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. the day he vanished. Henderson has never been heard from again.

Josh Spangler confessed to Henderson's murder in 2001, ten years after the child disappeared. Spangler was 13 years old at the time of the alleged killing and could not have served prison time for his role in the crime due to the fact that he was a minor when it was committed. Spangler was apparently involved in drug activity in 1991 and was associated with George N. Gibson and his older brother, Charles "Chuckie" Gibson. Charles is currently imprisoned on federal drug and money laundering charges. Both of the Gibson brothers were initially charged in connection with Henderson's case in the spring of 2001. Spangler told investigators that a member of Henderson's family owed money to Charles Gibson, and Spangler was paid to kill Henderson as a warning. Spangler said that he sold drugs for the Gibson brothers in 1991.

Spangler stated that he was riding in a truck with George on July 25, 1991, the day Henderson vanished, and that they abducted him and held him in a house in Davis, Missouri for a few days. Spangler said that they abducted the child and claimed that he shot Henderson in the head with a nine-millimeter pistol in a creek bed near Davis on July 28, 1991, three days after the boy was abducted. He said he was paid $10,000 by the Gibsons for abducting and killing the boy and that his body was buried along the Mississippi River.

Investigators searched a site near Winfield, Missouri in late July and early August 2001 for Henderson's remains. Nothing was located. Authorities withdrew charges against both of the Gibsons in October 2001 after learning that Spangler lied regarding their involvement in the crime. Citing numerous discrepancies in Spangler's account, they charged him with perjury in connection with his testimony about Henderson's supposed death. Spangler plead guilty to perjury and was sentenced to seven years in prison. At the time of his plea, he was serving a four-year prison sentence for unrelated charges of burglary and tampering. Authorities now believe Spangler had nothing to do with Henderson's disappearance. They say Spangler made up the story as a malicious joke to make the police look incompetent.

Authorities have not cast aside the theory that Henderson's disappearance may have been drug-related, but Henderson's mother denies allegations that she or any of her family members were involved with drugs. Henderson's mother describes him as a fun-loving boy who enjoyed telling stories. He lived with his mother at the time of his disappearance; his father died of emphysema in 1990. Henderson's sister was murdered ten years after his disappearance, but the crime was not related to his case; his sister was killed by her estranged husband, who subsequently committed su***de. Henderson's mother still lives in the same trailer park where her son used to live, but in a different mobile home. Her husband's name is still listed in the phone book in case Henderson decides to call home.

In 2007, investigators began investigating Michael J. Devlin for possible involvement in Henderson's disappearance and in several other cases, including the 1988 disappearance of Scott Kleeschulte and the 2005 disappearance of Bianca Piper. Shawn Hornbeck, a fifteen-year-old boy who disappeared at age eleven in 2002, and William "Ben" Ownby, a thirteen-year-old boy who was abducted in 2007, were both found alive and well in Devlin's house in January 2007. In October 2007 the task force dissolved, as it could not find any evidence that Devlin was involved with children other than Hornbeck and Ownby.

Henderson's bicycle was found in a bean field three months after his disappearance and was taken by the police as evidence. Investigators hope to identify a set of fingerprints discovered on its frame. His disappearance remains unsolved.

Garrett Alexander Bardsley

Missing Since: August 20, 2004 from Cuberant Lake, Utah
Classification: Lost/Injured Missing
Date Of Birth: July 24, 1992
Age: 12 years old
Height and Weight: 5'0, 105 pounds

Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian male. Light brown hair, hazel eyes. The photograph above shows Bardsley wearing braces, but he no longer had them by the time of his disappearance. He has a small gap between his two upper front teeth. Bardsley's hair was shoulder-length at the time of his disappearance.

Clothing/Jewelry Description: A black hooded Quick Silver pullover sweatshirt, size medium; reversible Nike sweatpants, one side red silky fabric with a black/white stripe on the legs and other black mesh with a red/white stripe on the legs; a white t-shirt, possibly with writing on it; Nike ankle socks; and white Converse sneakers with a black or navy-colored star on the sides, sized between six and eight.

Bardsley was last seen at approximately 8:00 a.m. on August 20, 2004, at Cuberant Lake in the Uinta Mountains of Utah. He was fishing with his father; they were on a wilderness trip with Bardsley's Boy Scout troop. Bardsley's feet got wet so he left to go back to their campsite, about 150 yards away, and change his shoes. He never arrived at the campsite and has never been heard from again. Bardsley was not carrying a backpack or any food on his person when he disappeared.

An extensive search turned up few clues as to Bardsley's whereabouts. A Nike ankle sock was found in a field of boulders half a mile from where Bardsley was last seen. Bardsley's mother identified the sock as belonging to her son, but one of the searchers also identified it as his own.

The area where Bardsley disappeared has very rough terrain. The day he vanished, the temperature was near freezing and it rained and hailed. Bardsley has passed wilderness training courses offered by the park council. Police say there is no evidence that he was abducted; they believe he became lost on the way back to the campsite and died of exposure.
