Today, to start off indigenous peoples day ,Dakota Wicohan was honored to join our relatives in Rapid City, South Dakota, for the Remembering the Children’s Memorial Walk.
We walk in remembrance of the children who were taken from their families, communities, and cultures through the boarding school and residential school systems. We honor the lives lost, acknowledge the genocide committed against our ancestors, and recognize the intergenerational trauma that continues to impact our families and communities today.
We stand with our relatives in honor, remembrance, and solidarity. The children will never be forgotten. Their stories, their spirits, and the strength of our ancestors live on through us.
At Dakota Wicohan, we remain committed to revitalizing our Dakota language, reclaiming our lifeways, strengthening our families, and empowering our youth. This work is more than a mission. It is a responsibility to our ancestors, our children, and the generations yet to come.
We remember. We honor. We continue the work.
