State regulators have struck a deal with environmental groups and the utility that owns the Green River Reservoir Dam that they say allows the facility to be relicensed.

šŸ“£GREEN RIVER UPDATEšŸ“£

Morrisville Water and Light, together with the Vermont Natural Resources Council, the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, American Whitewater, and the Vermont Council of Trout Unlimited, have jointly requested a status conference with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission regarding matters related to the Green River Reservoir, the FERC license, and the State of Vermont’s Water Quality Certification.

All parties are actively engaged in constructive discussions and are working collaboratively toward a resolution that protects water quality, environmental values, and the public interest, while also providing an outcome that is economically feasible for Morrisville Water and Light ratepayers. The parties are hopeful that a resolution can be soon reached and anticipate sharing additional updates in the weeks ahead.

Thanks to those who joined us for a very interesting and enjoyable presentation last Friday evening. We all learned a lot about otters, weasels, fishers, and minks. We appreciate Bree for sharing her knowledge, the Tech Center for sharing their space, and all those community members who came out on a rather nasty, cold, rainy evening!

We love our loons! We are appreciative of all those who help protect our iconic birds... VCE ( Eric, Eloise, and their hard working interns) , our loon volunteers, anglers who use our fishing line recycling bins, paddlers who respect the birds' space, and everyone who just enjoys watching the loons.

I watched Mark Pokras, a seasoned veterinarian from Tufts University, pull a jig out of the loon's gizzard. ā€œIf you can scrape the top layer, it's probably lead,ā€ he explained.

Annual Loon Count day! Sally, Terri, Tom K., and Sheila from the Board of Directors conducted our annual survey of loons on the reservoir. This is a statewide event, so loons are being counted today all over Vermont ( and nearby states as well). We counted 16 adults, 5 chicks, and one active loon nest with an adult incubating egg(s)...so we may get even more loons!! Thanks to everyone for supporting us, and for respecting the loons' space and territories. Zoom camera lenses and binoculars allow for special views of these amazing birds. (Plus, Zach Woods has tow adults with one chick.)

What a delightful morning at GRRSP! The park staff invited members of the board from Friends of Green River Reservoir as the new park cargo canoe was dedicated. The Friends donated this canoe, and its electric motor, to the park in order to have a quieter and more efficient service boat for the staff. The noisy clunker of an aluminum boat with its gasoline engine no longer lives at the reservoir...this beautiful cargo canoe will silently be cruising the reservoir, providing support to the staff and reservoir users. PC: Terri Gregory, Milford Cushman, and Sheila Goss
