Ann Carter Huckaby is feeling sad.

The decision to cancel this year's event was only made to continue our tradition of working for the safety of our graduates and the welfare of our community.

This year that can best be served by following the recommendations that will end the spread of the Covid 19 virus. To complete preparation for Project Graduation many people work together tirelessly each year.

As a member of the Board of Directors, putting an event together takes volunteer leadership. Thanks to Carol Manning Austin and Amanda Buchanan and her family we were able to have successful events the past six years. Neither have received adequate credit for their dedication and hard work. This year Carol has continued to serve Project Graduation as usual. Volunteers have been scarce. Cancellation was our only option.

It takes months of planning and hundreds of volunteers to make Project Graduation successful.

With social distancing, the volunteers cannot do the up-front work necessary to pull the event off.

If you have never worked with Project Graduation, you don't realize that it cannot be rescheduled because of all the different elements that must come together.

It's not just a time and a place; it is the result of hundreds of volunteers and hundreds of hours of "feet-on-the-ground" work.

Please realize and understand that canceling this event was not taken lightly. We are in unchartered waters and it could not be done in our current crisus.

Sincerely, Teresa Ayers, member of the Project Graduation Board of Directors.

2020 Project Graduation Cancellation Notice

Due to the many uncertainties of the days and months ahead, the Board of Directors for Project Graduation Hamblen County has made the difficult decision to cancel the event previously scheduled for May 22, 2020.

Since our preparations for the event involve advance contractual commitments and payments, we feel that it would be fiscally irresponsible to move forward given the present circumstances. We realize that there will be many needs in our community that are very important, and we want the resources of the community to be available for these needs.

This has been a heartbreaking decision, but we feel that it is in the best interest of our students, volunteers and our community supporters.

If you have already made a donation, we will gladly refund or return your gift. We’ll be in touch with you soon to find out how you would like for us to proceed.

We appreciate your long-standing support of Project Graduation and our celebration for the high school graduates of Hamblen County. We look forward to being back on track next year for Hamblen County’s Class of 2021 graduates.
