When ReThink Health rolled out the Ventures project, we had already been teaming up with multisector partnerships across the country for over a decade. We observed that even the most advanced groups faced giant challenges when trying to fundamentally shift conditions in their communities to significantly improve the health and well-being of all residents.

The more we understood what it would take to advance regional change on this level of magnitude, the more we affirmed the focus in Ventures: help bring about health transformation by making it more possible for all of the people and sectors with a footprint on a region’s health and well-being to do business in profoundly different ways, together.

Read the final evaluation report and site case studies to learn more about the insights and learnings gleaned from this three-year project co-funded by Rippel and RWJF:

The question is: how can regional stewards anticipate and better manage team members’ reactions to these inevitable transitions, gleaning more of their potential benefits and minimizing negative outcomes?

Today on the ReThinkers’ Blog, Nina Burke and Ruth Wageman ask and answer the question: how can regional stewards anticipate and better manage leadership transitions?

Whenever folks at our ReThink Health initiative present on the possibilities of getting paid for conducting integrative activities, regional leaders have expressed skepticism that this is even a possibility. It’s true that integrative activities are undervalued—“general operation” activities usually are.

All too often, even those who are carrying them out for a regional transformation effort dismiss them as unfundable, and as a result don’t even attempt to pursue getting compensated for the value they provide.

It’s time leaders like you start to confront some of the myths around financing your work. Below are the five myths we hear about the most, juxtaposed with what we learned while preparing the financing workbook.

All too often, even those who are carrying out integrative activities for a regional transformation effort dismiss the work as not fundable and, as a result, don’t pursue compensation. It’s time leaders like you start to confront some of the myths around financing your own work. In our latest bl...

"The practice of sharing leadership among many players is known as distributed leadership. Distributed leadership can be thought of as both a governance structure, which specifies leadership accountabilities for different groups and the relationships between them, and as a practice, a way that individual leaders can think and act. Within a distributed governance structure, integrative activities—which involve governing and managing the work happening within and across collaborative partnerships in a region to achieve a common purpose—are distributed among many groups and individuals rather than owned by a single entity."

In regions where people and organizations from many different sectors have come together to transform their health ecosystems, those that have made the most progress are finding that distributed leadership is essential to their success. Today, on the ReThinker’s Blog, Ruth Wageman and Nina Burke w...
