Using laptop computers donated by Project STEAM Role
partner Electronic Access Foundation , STEAMRolers checked
out Career Girls to take career quizzes and explore what they are
thinking about being when they grow up. They got a chance to
peek into the future and to think about how they could merge
their talents and interests in ways they hadn't even thought
about. It was a cool introduction to the myriad possibilities that
await them in the world of STEAM. They also played a rousing game of STEM Career Bingo to round out the experience.
They also had a chance to engage in some serious engineering
using the Design Process to imagine, sketch and build their
versions of structurally sound bridges using popsicle sticks, glue
and ingenuity. The girls learned that whether it is a truss bridge,
a beam bridge or a suspension bridge, there is a great deal of
testing and readjusting that comes along with a build. That's a
great lesson for STEAM and an important lesson for life

The Community League of the Heights (CLOTH) has become a very important partner for us to aid in the distribution of computers and other devices to K-12 students in NYC. We greatly appreciate their support and kind words and look forward to being able to donate additional equipment this fall to them. If your business has computers you no longer use, please consider donating them to EAF and email us at [email protected].

"Once again we here at CLOTH After School Program are grateful for this amazing opportunity, and most importantly this partnership. I am very excited to see how many lives this partnership will impact and the success rate to reach interdependence create by simply having access to a laptop. During this second round of Laptop Give-Aways we targeted families that not only the students needed this technology, but the entire family would benefit from having a computer at home. Our families are always thankful for the support and I look to sharing some of their success stories with you. Please view the emails provided with a few of the happy faces you helped create. Thank you!"

We'd like to congratulate the JAHMA Foundation for reaching this fantastic milestone. For the last 5 years, Electronic Access Foundation has partnered with the JAHMA Foundation to donate laptops and desktops to all of their scholarship recipients who needed a computer to continue their education. This effort has provided well over a 100 computers to these NJ students living in JAHMA member communities. We also thank American Architectural Window & Door for their financial support to help us supply this technology. If your business has computers you no longer use, please consider donating them to EAF so that we can continue to support other nonprofits doing this type of work!

EAF, Digitunity and the Jersey City Housing Authority gave 75 computers to young people who needed them for their education, in a public event at July 28, at the Booker T. Washington housing development in Jersey City, New Jersey. In total, over 300 computers will be provided to JCHA youth.

The event is one of several distributions in the New York City area for Digitunity, a national nonprofit organization that closes the technology gap by connecting low-income people with the computers they need. Digitunity believes access to a computer at home has become vital for people to succeed both in school and economically.

"In today's education system, children need a computer in their home to do research and run the applications they need for homework and projects. Yet, one-third of Black and Hispanic households don't have that resource," said Scot Henley, executive director of Digitunity. "Providing these computers helps close the digital divide. That is Digitunity's mission. We're thrilled to partner with the Jersey City Housing Authority and Electronic Access Foundation to help these young people."

The Electronic Access Foundation is an all volunteer nonprofit organization and Digitunity partner that obtains surplus electronic equipment from corporations, universities, and other groups and donates them to other qualified charitable organizations.

The Jersey City Housing Authority (JCHA), created in 1938, provides affordable housing for low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities. It administers about 7,100 housing units, home to over 15,000 people. JCHA administrators thank both groups for their support.

"Digitunity and our local partner, Electronic Access Foundation, have played an essential role in the development of JCHA's digital inclusion initiatives since 2019," said JCHA Executive Director Vivian Brady-Phillips.

"Through donations of refurbished computers, EAF has provided computers that enabled JCHA to develop on-site computer labs at four of our public housing developments and provided computers directly to families. With these resources, JCHA leverages local nonprofit partnerships to host digital literacy classes and provide computer access to residents without devices at home. This latest initiative with AT&T will allow nearly 300 of its youngest residents in-home computers to truly access a 21st-century education."

Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fullop said the initiative was another example of how the city employs creative approaches to assist its citizens.

"In Jersey City, we've taken innovative approaches to expand opportunities for all residents, with a focus on eliminating the socioeconomic barriers disproportionately impacting communities of color," Fullop said. "From promoting homeownership and self-sufficiency, to place-based community programs that support children and seniors, provide vital resources and create powerful partnerships that deliver results, including this latest initiative. The work we're doing together today will impact residents for generations to come. We want to get local businesses involved in donating used computers to support digital equity for low-income families."

About Jersey City Housing Authority
The Jersey City Housing Authority (JCHA) is New Jersey's second-largest public housing authority. Serving 15,000 residents in Jersey City, it is the most diverse municipality in the country. JCHA is responsible for the administration of approximately 7,100 housing units, including 2,400 public housing units and over 4,700 Housing Choice Vouchers.

Recognizing that resident needs go beyond housing, JCHA established its Department of Resident Empowerment and Community Engagement (RECE) in 2018. It has developed innovative partnerships with government agencies, nonprofits, and institutes of higher education to offer a broad range of services to residents with a focus on youth, workforce development, seniors, and digital inclusion.

As a result of its contracts with internet service providers, including Starry and Andrena, and paired with the FCC's subsidy programs, nearly 1,500 JCHA households will have access to free, high-speed internet by late 2022.

The JCHA has been lauded as a champion of energy efficiency and green building practices, policies promoting Section 3 hiring, and an impeccable track record of revitalizing distressed public housing. In addition, its Section 8 program has been ranked among the best in the state.

EAF was back in the Bronx this week working with Alyna Brown. Alyna is the Program Coordinator and Assurance Analyst for the Youth Employment Services program within the Youth development unit, now called the Journey's program, at Catholic Guardian Services. Their program is in place to make sure the foster youth they serve obtains the grooming and skills they need to be successful in the workforce. The program was initially developed to assist aging out-of-care foster youth with the ability to obtain a job, so they can be financially stable as they make the transition to being independent. It has since included younger clients as well (age 14-17). Their main focus is career exploration and teaching them the skills they need to obtain and maintain employment.

Last year, EAF was able to provide their students who have limited or no access to technology with a computer lab where they can come and use the computers to complete our job workforce program, fix their resumes, and find jobs. This week we were excited this year to take it one step further and supply youth with personal laptop devices making it it easier for their students who do not have the time to come to our offices to utilize the computer lab.

Alyna Brown wrote "For 2021 and 2022, and have been a blessing to our program and youth. I would like to personally thank Greg Campbell for thinking of us and arranging for us to get devices that help our youth stay connected with technology."
