Every day is a fight for local news. According to the new report "In the past year, 170 newspapers have closed or merged. The pace of newspaper closures hit an average of about three per week."

It's up to each one of us to make a difference and support our local news outlets so that they don't disappear! Help us in this effort - subscribe, donate, and spread the word about the importance of true journalism that focuses on our NJ towns and residents. www.newsweneed.org

We are proud to announce that John Mooney, founding editor of NJ Spotlight News, will receive the 2026 Lifetime Achievement in New Jersey Journalism Award.

For more than four decades, John has helped New Jersey residents understand the policies and decisions that shape their lives. Before he launched NJ Spotlight, he spent years covering education for The Star-Ledger and The Record and contributed to The New York Times. His work earned honors from the Education Writers Association and the American Society of News Editors.

The award is one of the top honors to be presented by the nonprofit Corporation for New Jersey Local Media (CNJLM) during this year’s Byrne Kean NJ Journalism Awards event on Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Morris Museum in Morristown. Join us to honor him and other award winners at: https://go.rallyup.com/njnewsawards.

Local news is how we understand our communities, hold decision-makers accountable, and have a say in what shapes our daily lives.

As Joanna Gagis puts it: "Local news allows for civic engagement." We couldn't agree more, and we're thrilled to have her as emcee for this year's Byrne Kean NJ Journalism Awards.

Join us on November 5, 2026 at the Morris Museum in Morristown as we honor the journalists and newsrooms who tell the stories of New Jersey.

Come join in and grab a seat while they are still available:

From 1995 until Gov. Brendan Byrne’s passing in 2018, he and Gov. Tom Kean, a Democrat and a Republican, sat down together in the pages of the Star-Ledger to talk about New Jersey and the nation. They didn’t always agree, but they always kept it civil.

That’s the legacy behind the 2026 Byrne Kean NJ Journalism Awards. Join us Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Morris Museum in Morristown as we celebrate the journalists keeping New Jersey informed.

Where do you get your local news?

Not from AI. Not from bots. Not from that one neighbor who posts in all caps.

Real local news comes from real reporters: people who show up to the council meeting, call the sources, check the facts, and live in the community they cover.

When local journalism disappears, so does our ability to know what's happening in our own towns. Let's keep it alive.
