In the Summer ANJEC Report (pp. 6-8) read why towns are increasingly viewing dam removal as a more practical and sustainable alternatives as the financial, legal and safety burdens of dam ownership continue to grow. And, sometimes dams can make flooding worse for roads, houses and businesses in the area.

Thank you to the Glen Rock Environmental Commission for this reminder~
Migration season for birds has already begun. Many species fly thousands of miles from their summer to their winter grounds and must refuel en route. So keep your garden a little messy to help them find food — don’t clean up until next spring is well advanced.

Also, and very important, keep outdoor lighting to a minimum.

Meteorologist Chris Vickers~
HAPPENING NOW: A massive surge of birds migrating! An estimated 225,000,000+ birds detected on the network of NEXRAD Doppler Radar across every single state along and east of the Mississippi River Friday evening! The intensity of the bird migration is so concentrated, it’s interpreted by Doppler Radar as moderate to heavier precipitation. These “false echoes” on radar are actually birds heading south for the fall migration under clear skies, a full moon and a cooler area of High pressure.

Based on data obtained via BirdCast and Doppler Radar, the majority of these birds are traveling in a south at an altitude around 2,100 feet. Several states from Pennsylvania, New York, Kentucky, Tennessee to Alabama are all reporting the highest concentrations of bird migrations so far this season with at least 10,000,000 or more birds currently on the move in each state!

PLEASE HELP: Turn OFF unnecessary outdoor lights. Light pollution is harmful and can disorient and disrupt natural nocturnal bird migrations. This light pollution can have harmful or deadly consequences to these sensitive creatures. Thank you!

The Caldwell Environmental Commission and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program have completed a series of rain garden installations across Caldwell.

Each garden is planted with native species selected to support local pollinators and birds, reinforcing the ecological value and water quality benefits.

Belmar Environmental Commission ~
The tall vegetation around Silver Lake has been removed.

The buffer was created as part of the town’s ongoing efforts to address the resident geese overpopulation and harmful algae blooms. Leaving the shoreline un-mowed created a taller buffer that obstructed sightlines for Canada geese—making them feel vulnerable to predators—which helped cut down on their population, goose waste and algae-fueling nutrient loads.

Our approach is now changing to address the fast-spreading invasive species like Phragmites australis (common reed) that has rapidly taken over the shoreline and crowded out native flora and blocked lake views, and to prepare for the upcoming next stages of the lake restoration.

The Boro of Belmar and the Environmental Commission secured over $1.25 million in grant funding to provide the capital needed to transition from informal management to a fully engineered restoration plan. The United States Army Corp of Engineers will shortly deliver a report and plan for the lake restoration and the town is evaluating the best options for a Project Manager to lead the restoration efforts.
Stay tuned for future updates.

The largest planned AI data center in NJ (Vineland) is being accused of violating federal law after a Floodlight visual investigation found the site running at least 45 of the site’s 62 generators at the time… None have permits.

Located roughly a mile from two schools, the tractor-trailer-size generators emit substantial amounts of health-harming air pollution linked to asthma, heart attacks and even premature death.
