United Way of Hamblen County is an independent organization governed by a local Board of Directors who direct funds where they are needed the most. United Way and it's Agencies use the services of more than 200 volunteers each campaign year.

For all 71 years of United Way Hamblen County's history, Great Smoky Mountain Council, Scouting America has been a valued partner in helping shape the next generation of leaders, citizens, and community servants.

The impact of Scouting can be seen throughout Hamblen County in the lives of those who have carried its values into their careers, volunteer service, and community leadership.

Few individuals embody that legacy more than Tom Strate, an Eagle Scout, recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, recipient of the National Eagle Scout Association's Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, 2024 Good Scout Honoree, and current Executive Board member.

As Tom reflects:

"For over 110 years, Scouting America has prepared young men and women to serve their neighbor, to be prepared for the unexpected, and to live a moral life.

Scouting shaped my life in a very personal way, and that is why I continue to be committed to the Scout Oath and Law and 'do my best' to live my life according to those principles. Preparing young people to be good citizens and leaders offers Morristown a bright future."

Through Scouting, young people have opportunities to:

⚜️ Develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities
🤝 Serve their communities through volunteer projects

Sometimes the greatest measure of an organization's impact is found in a single story.

When Alexis Swaney first came to Stepping Out, Inc., she was looking for guidance on becoming a better parent, building a healthier relationship with her husband, and creating a stronger future for her family.

Through Stepping Out's Parenting and Automatic Positive Thinking classes, Alexis gained skills, confidence, and a new perspective on life. She learned healthier ways to navigate challenges, strengthen relationships, and focus on personal growth.

Today, Alexis has regained full custody of her daughter, obtained reliable transportation, and is preparing to further her education while continuing her recovery journey.

Her story is a powerful reminder that lasting change doesn't happen overnight. It happens when people are equipped with the tools, support, and encouragement they need to move forward.

Stepping Out helps individuals and families through programs focused on:
📚 Building positive thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
👨‍👩‍👧 Strengthening parenting skills and creating healthier family relationships

This year marks an exciting milestone as Isaiah 117 House Hamblen County TN joins United Way Hamblen County as one of our partner agencies for the first time.

When children are removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or other unsafe situations, they often enter foster care carrying little more than the clothes they're wearing.

During those difficult moments, Isaiah 117 House provides a safe, welcoming place where children can receive comfort, care, and the essentials they need while awaiting placement with a foster family or relative.

In 2025, Isaiah 117 House - Hamblen County:

🏡 Served 100 children through the Isaiah 117 House
🤝 Supported an additional 74 children through foster family and kinship placements
🧸 Provided clothing, comfort items, meals, and a child-focused environment during times of crisis
❤️ Helped reduce trauma for children entering foster care while supporting foster families and child welfare professionals

💙❤️ Rich in Community: 31 Days of Impact

For all 71 years of United Way Hamblen County's history, the American Red Cross of Northeast Tennessee has been a trusted partner in helping local residents prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies.

When disaster strikes, the first priority is helping people find safety, stability, and hope.

In 2025, the chapter served 74 Hamblen County residents through services such as immediate financial assistance following disasters, including house fires and flooding, as well as casework services that help individuals and families navigate the road to recovery.

But the Red Cross does more than respond to emergencies.

Their work also helps make our community safer and more prepared through:

🩸 Blood drives
🚨 Sound the Alarm smoke detector installation events, which provide free smoke alarms and fire safety education to help prevent home fire tragedies
⛑️ CPR and First Aid training
📋 Disaster preparedness education and outreach

Many people know the Red Cross for the help they provide after a disaster. Just as important is the work they do every day to equip families with the knowledge, resources, and tools to stay safe before emergencies occur.

🎃 Halloween is a season of fun, traditions, and creating memories. But for many families in Hamblen County, even small seasonal expenses can stretch an already tight household budget.

According to the latest ALICE data, 49% of Hamblen County households are living below the ALICE Threshold, including 32% who are ALICE and 17% who are living in poverty.

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are hardworking households who earn too much to qualify for many forms of assistance, yet still struggle to afford basic necessities.

As you enjoy the season, we invite you to think about the neighbors around us who may be facing difficult financial choices, not just during Halloween, but throughout the year.

Through United Way Hamblen County and our partner agencies, local families are connected to food, housing assistance, healthcare, educational opportunities, and other resources that help them move toward stability.

Living with epilepsy can affect nearly every aspect of daily life, from school and work to transportation, healthcare, and social connections. For individuals and families in Hamblen County, the Epilepsy Foundation of East Tennessee provides support, education, and resources to help ensure no one faces that journey alone.

While the organization is based outside of Hamblen County, many of its services are available virtually, making support accessible to local residents when and where they need it most.

Their services include:

🧠 Epilepsy education and seizure first aid training
💻 Virtual and in-person support groups for individuals and caregivers
🚗 Assistance with transportation and medical expenses
🎨 Wellness and creative enrichment programs
🤝 Advocacy, connection, and guidance for families affected by epilepsy

The Foundation's mission is simple but powerful: "So no one faces epilepsy alone."

What a fantastic morning at our Mid-Campaign Report Breakfast!

Thank you to everyone who joined us as we celebrated the progress our community has made together and looked ahead to the work still to come.

One of the most powerful moments of the morning came from Van Makres, Executive Director of Safe Space of East Tennessee. Van shared the story of a woman who survived domestic violence after enduring unimaginable abuse and hardship before finding safety, support, and hope through SafeSpace's shelter and services. Stories like hers remind us that behind every campaign dollar is a real person whose life can be changed through access to critical resources and compassionate care. Through United Way Hamblen County's support, SafeSpace continues serving individuals and families right here in Hamblen County.

Campaign Chair Jessica Rich shared several reasons to celebrate, including:
🎯 Creating customized campaign materials designed to better connect with different industries and workforces - including Spanish translations (thanks, Jen 😉!)

👑 Morristown West Student Council Homecoming Court raising more than $1,400, with Cora Sanders and Caleb Woolsey earning the titles of Mr. and Miss Homecoming through their fundraising efforts

💙 A $20,000 Community Care Fund contribution from Morristown Utilities and Tennessee Valley Authority

⛳ Rogers Petroleum's annual benefit golf tournament raising more than $75,000

⭐ Leadership Giving reaching $544,058, including 84 new leadership-level donors

🥁 And the biggest update of the morning...

The 2026 United Way Hamblen County Campaign has reached $756,902, or 51% of our $1.479 million goal!

We're also grateful to our breakfast sponsors for helping make this event possible: CNB (Citizens National Bank), HomeTrust Bank, Commercial Bank, First Bank & Trust Company, Andrew Johnson Bank, Purkey Carter Compton Swann & Carter, and Healthstar Physicians, P.C..

The photos shared today highlight something we all need at every stage of life: connection.

Through the Senior Citizens Center - Morristown, Tennessee, local seniors find opportunities to build friendships, stay active, learn new skills, and remain engaged in the community they call home.

But the impact goes far beyond social activities.

The Senior Center also helps older adults access important resources and services, including:
🍎 Food box distribution for seniors who are homebound or unable to travel
📋 Medicare and Medicaid assistance and guidance
📝 Tax preparation services and support
🎨 Educational, recreational, and enrichment activities
🤝 Opportunities to connect with friends and build community

Whether it's helping a senior complete a tax return, understand healthcare options, receive needed food assistance, or simply enjoy a day spent with friends, the Senior Center works to ensure older adults remain supported, informed, and connected.

In honor of National Youth Day, we're celebrating the hundreds of young people who are learning, growing, and building bright futures through the Boys & Girls Club of Morristown.

In 2025, the Club served 719 enrolled members, reached an additional 435 youth through facility use and special events, and even provided programming opportunities for 15 seniors through water aerobics classes.

Every day, children and teens walk through the Club's doors to find:

📚 Academic support and learning opportunities
⭐ Character and leadership development
🤝 Positive mentors and role models
🏀 Healthy recreation and physical activity
🎨 Programs that inspire creativity, confidence, and growth

The impact extends far beyond after-school hours. The Boys & Girls Club provides a place where young people can discover their potential, build lasting relationships, and gain the skills they need to succeed in school, work, and life.

As we recognize National Youth Day, we're reminded that investing in young people is one of the most meaningful ways to strengthen the future of Hamblen County.
