This is the time of year we typically see algae blooms as the lake has started to de-stratify/mix for Fall turnover. This past week the lake had many areas where blooms were present. The red stop sign is now on our website, guidance is for people and pets to avoid the lake until conditions improve. See our website for more information about water testing and Cyanobacteria bantamlakect.com under Environmental/Cyanos Activity where the full report from Sept 3rd testing is available.

Town of Morris Ordinance Rejected.
There was a great turnout for the informational session and vote last night. People were highly engaged and brought their feedback, concerns and suggestions. The proposed increase is distance from shore for skiing was a major problem for many and as a result the ordinance did not pass. BLPA will meet to discuss all the input and recommendations and come back to our community soon on next steps. We thank everyone who showed up last night, it was a great opportunity to openly discuss and debate some of the issues impacting Bantam Lake.

Today is World Lake Day.
The United Nations designated August 27th as World Lake Day to raise awareness about the crucial role lakes play in biodiversity, climate, and human well-being. Lakes are one of the most vital natural resources on our planet.
There are 117 million lakes on Earth covering 4% of the planets land surface. Lakes are facing a serious decline due to over use and pollution. Let’s work together to protect them today for a sustaining life tomorrow.

Please come to the Morris Town Meeting Thursday, August 28th at 6p to learn about and vote on an ordinance being proposed to protect Bantam Lake.

Issue: Large wakes and downward prop wash from wake boats disturb the bottom of the lake, especially close to shore, which increases phosphorous release and blue green algae production. In addition, large waves damage native species, spread invasive weeds and lead to erosion of shore buffers that protect the lake.

Ordinance proposal:
1) prohibit wake surfing/wakeboarding within 500 ft from shore/docks/mored vessels
2) No wake surfing/wakeboarding South Bay/Cove
3) No skiing within 200 ft of shore except for enabling take off or landing

There are many new studies confirming that wakeboats damage lake bottoms and shorelines - especially in shallow water. Many lakes are adopting guidelines that help to protect the long term health of waterbodies. We hope to see everyone there!
